Any advice most appreciated!

DS is obsessed with buses.  The more realistic the better.

So was thinking of trying to make something like the below.

I am fairly confident working with fondant and was planning on taking some "cheats" by using toy car wheels some licorice strips for the detail on the windows and the windscreen wipers.  I will probably use some black (or gray) gel pens for the infill of the windows as well.

My plan:

Measure up DS's fave toy bus and scale it up for dimensions.
Bake up some mudcakes in a loaf tin and trim the cakes to make the shape of the bus.
Cover in ganache.
Use white fondant to cover the whole thing and then use a scalpel to cut out the windows and windscreen.
Colour some fondant and cut and apply for the stripe details (or would these be better painted on?) and other details such as headlights and indicators.
Infill the windscreens and windows with the gel, then pick out the window shapes with thin licorice straps.

What have I forgotten?
Any other tips to make the job easier?
Am I completely off my rocker for attempting this Tounge1.gif

Have you worked with fondant before? If you have and are pretty confident then you certainly have some good plans in place and I don't think you are nuts at all.

I would cut fondant strips for the stripe detail.

My daughter loves buses too, but I'm not game enough to try making one. That looks great!
Have you looked in the latest Women's Weekly kids cake cookbook? There's a firetruck which might give you some ideas of how to get the shape right.
You can colour fondant black with powder or get colour, would be pretty easy to do the black that way.

If you are confident with fondant, that looks like a fairly straightforward assembly job.

look at you tube, there is  a fire truck that you can follow (I used it for a garbage truck template) ... use biscuits like oreos for the wheels, smarties or lollies for the headlights lights, just give yourself plenty of time!

Yes, yes you are. Fondant is the devil and was put on this earth to make us frustrated beyond belief in the kitchen.

I do think its awesome that your DS is bus obsessed though original.gif

If you're using black fondant, don't bother colouring it yourself - so much easier just to buy black fondant pre-coloured.

I'm still pretty much a beginner with fondant, and I think it looks pretty straight forward... what I mean is that I'd be confident enough to give it a go. I may be delusional though!

Post a pic when you're done!
