*may be spoilers*

I have just gotten into this series and finished season 1 last night and I have to get this out. Why did they have to kill off Karl and Ned Stark  sad.gif  I was really liking those characters and they didn't even make it to the next season, I was glad when a couple of people died Viserys Targaryen just annoyed me so glad he is gone but why oh why did Eddard Stark have to go, stupid stupid show lol.

I like to think they killed off Ned because there just isn't a comparable "gaspworthy" moment that I can recall in recent tv.

DH and I sat in a heavy silence for a good 30 seconds after that episode until it was broken by a not so silent.....

"Well f*** me"

And yes, I know it is an adaptation of a book, but I didn't read until the season 1 withdrawal kicked in, and I honestly think the tv show captured the moment of his demise better than the book.

As for Khal, that's simply a device to kick the story along.

I think both the deaths are plot movers but for different reasons. I hadn't read the book but was expecting Ned to lose his head. I kept hoping that he wouldn't but in my heart of hearts I knew it was going to happen

They killed Ned Stark because it's in Sean Bean's contract that he be killed off in every TV show/movie.

Ok that's really not true but there are very few shows he doesn't end up dead in Tounge1.gif  There's even a YouTube deathreel of Sean Bean dying.

GRR Martin is pretty um well profligate with the killing.  It's not worth getting attached to any characters.

LOL at the Jon Snow post though.

Yep, having read the books (just getting through e most recent one) pulse don't become attached to any of the chracaters, Martin likes to have fun with them.

Love the series though, LOVE IT

I love the series, it is fantastic.

I love Tyrian Lannister, he cracks me up and his sense of humour is great.

I watched the first series then read all the books, GRR Martin doesn't mind killing off major characters, just wait and see what happens at the end of Book 5!!

I haven't read the books yet, I made the mistake of reading all the true blood books before watching the series and now I sit there yelling at the tv telling it off for getting the show all wrong.

Yeah but you can't really compare the two. Game of Thrones is very faithful to the book. Tru Blood is barely recognisable by season 3.

Well that certainly shows a different perspective of cow tippng!

Memo to Sean: get a new manager.

I had to read up on the books because i became soooo confuzzled by the different characters. That has lead to me being more confuzzled.

I love SONG OF ICE & FIRE -Unfortunately Martin takes forever to write the books (5 currently & he's going to write another 2). Also, nothing much is happening & I've read all the books that have been published! So annoyed that these CREATURES from the North still haven't 'attacked' yet -I wonder what they're going to do with the films. Good thing is that the first book (GAME OF THRONES) is the same as the TV series. They didn't miss much of a beat there except for a couple of things.

GAME OF THRONES S02 is airing in the USA. Downloaded the first two episodes & they are looking pretty good....

ummm, not all of us have read the books. If you are going to post spoilers, please, highlight the fact. I am not that annoyed by this spoiler as it is something I had already figured out but there are clearly characters that are and are not going to make it and I would like to see it unfold for myself

Except you don't actually know that, cause GRRM hasn't finished writing yet.

I like to get really attached to characters, because you have NO idea what GRRM will do with them, and with all the majic involved, who really knows biggrin.gif

I read the books LONG before the TV series even started filming. And I am extremely pleased with how they are doing the books justice. It certainly helps that GRRM is so connected with the process, and even does one of the episode screenplays himself each season!

Happy Watching biggrin.gif

This is got to be my favourite show of all times! I am hooked! I downloaded the first series from US and am doing the same with the second because they are a tiny bit ahead of us and I can't bare to wait! After watching the first one I went and bought all 5 of the books and am just on book 2 now and slightly ahead of the second series. The books have slight differences and are organised differently than the show. He's a great writer though.

Have any of you seen Ken Follet's Pillars of the Earth? It's in a similar vain to this although not as mystical with the dragons etc. I enjoyed that show as well.
