What can I add to rolled oats for breakfast
To make it taste nice

In my quest to be healthier I've bought some rolled oats to have for breakfast.  I need to put some other things with them though, to make it tastier.  Any ideas?

Brown sugar and hot milk.

LOL Beltie.  I toast them with almonds, a variety of seeds, maple syrup and olive oil and then store that jar in the fridge.  I eat it with yoghurt and fresh or tinned fruit.

Make some Bircher muesli
Rolled oats, water and lemon juice (left to soak overnight).  Stir in yogurt, grated apple, honey, berries, seeds/nuts if you like...and hey presto!  It's delicious.  Even my kids coff bowls of this!

My favourite is to cook the oats (porridge) and add apples and/or pears stewed with sultanas and brown sugar. So, so good.

Also great with a dollop of Greek yoghurt, LSA, a drizzle of maple syrup and a sliced banana.

Honey and berries, or honey & banana.

Def need the honey though, it's pretty darn bland without it.

I add a handful of (non-toasted or salted) raw fruit/ seed/ nut mix that I buy in the health food section and either add skim milk or a plain yoghurt to it too.

If you need something a little sweeter, add a drip of honey or flavoured yoghurt?

I use quick cooking oats and zap them in the microwave using a half/half mix of skim milk and water as I personally find using just water not as nice.

Traditional flavourings are butter and salt or brown sugar/ honey but obviously not a healthy option original.gif I would also suggest the pre-flavoured sachet ones, although rather yummy are choc full of sugar *sigh*. I buy them as a treat breakfast when we travel.

My kids like sultanas stirred through, or chopped dried apricots maybe with a drizzle of honey. Sometimes they add milk, sometimes they like it without... gosh, sometimes they don't even want me to cook it first and just eat dried oats! LOL Tounge1.gif

I make a muesli which is an old WW recipe.

Homemade Fig & Almond Muesli:

2 1/2 cups rolled oats
1/3 cup oat bran
50g natural almonds coarsely chopped
1/2 cup sultanas
110g dried figs chopped
1/4 cup sunflower seed kernals
1/4 cup pepitas
1 tbs linseeds

Combine all ingredients & store in an  airtight container.
Makes 5 cups, 15 x 1/3 cup serves

Before you heat it, grate an apple into it.  Just wash the apple, and leave it whole, and just grate it like that.  Add the water and cook it.  It is delicious!  Super easy too!

I cook mine (quick oats) in the microwave with water and cinnamon, then stir in either frozen berries or grated apple to both cool it down and sweeten it. Then I put a mix of pepitas, sunflower seeds, raw cashews and raw almonds on top with chopped fresh fruit (something seasonal, such as strawberries, half a pear or a nectarine.) Yum!

The pre-flavoured packets, while convenient, are not that healthy and have heaps of added sugar.

Apple and cinnamon - you won't use anywhere near as much sugar if you add these!

Pretty much any combo of fruit and nuts works for me, plus cinnamon and/or nutmeg.

I often add chopped prunes and dried apricots.

I also find if you add really ripe mashed banana and mix it through, you won't need any other sweetener. Particularly good with chopped walnuts and some freshly grated nutmeg.

Milk all the way! We ran out of milk one day and used water and it was horrible and bland and only fit for using as wall paper paste IMO.

It's tastier raw without sugar, whereas once cooked into porridge I find it tastes a bit bland and mushy and so I end up loading it with sugar. Whereas we tip a bag of oats into a big Tupperware container, add some sultanas, pepitas, slivered almonds, and bran. Mix. Eat with cold milk or yogurt. No sugar (except what's in the sultanas), lots of fibre, and expands in your stomach so keeps you full all morning.

I just buy the plain quick oats (make them to directions) and add a spoon of low fat vanilla yoghurt, a handful of frozen berries and a banana. It really is YUM and very low fat (using skim milk).

According to WW it is only about 5 points so a great breakfast and I find they keep me fuller for longer.

I make porridge with 50/50 milk/water.  It makes it takes nicer than just water, but I don't like it all milk.

I add a little brown sugar to mine, but I put dried apple in my DDs (I dry my own so no preservatives).

My grandma used to make her own muesli.  She'd mix rolled oats, raw sugar, sultanas, dried apricots (I think), some wheatgerm and bran.

I cook mine in the Thermomix - I whizz some dates or apricots or apple first, then add the oats and milk (I never make my porridge with water) and cook.  Dates are my favourite!

The commercial muesli that I buy has those bran sticks (like All Bran) and shredded coconut, on top of the usual oats, sultanas and sugar.

Cook them in milk, not water. I actually soak mine overnight (if they aren't 'quick oats'), then add a bit of water for cooking.

Throw in some dried fruit (apricots and sultanas are a favourite here), and then top with some pureed apples.

I make a fruit smoothie for breakfast and add them raw to that and blend.  Helps keep you full for ages and the smoothies are delicious

I just use a little bit of brown sugar, or a teaspoon of proper (ie, non-gelatine) jam. It's worth the extra 50 calories.  happy.gif

Dates are good.  Just dice up some softish dates before you cook, add a tiny bit of sugar if you need to to sweeten but I rarely, if ever, do.  Drizzle with cream when you serve it, or I guess you could use yoghurt given it needs to be somewhat healthy, lol. Tounge1.gif  You can add a bit of spice to it as well but I'm lazy so don't.  I also always cook in milk not water.

My stock standard is chopped about 4 dried dates into the saucepan, add rolled oats, pinch of salt and water, cook the oats until done, pour over a little milk and maybe a smidgen of sugar if really needing a sugar hit. Lovely original.gif
