Is a positive HPT ever negative? **UPDATE POST 110**
This is impossible...

This is such an astonishing tale, I can't bring myself to believe it.

I've just been diagnosed with PCOS, am on the pill, DH and I haven't had sex in 3 months, and within that time I have had both blood tests and ultrasounds (to diagnose PCOS - neither indicated that I was pregnant), and yet, last night and this morning received VERY strong positives. I did one test last night (can't remember brand and have thrown out box), and one this morning, both very strong - coming up well before the control line and a bit darker than it.

I'm freaked out. I didn't think this was going to be possible without surgery. We're not ready. Our house is a bomb site with no flooring. I have no maternity leave, and we have minimal savings. I want children with everything I have, but this doesn't feel right. I'm not prepared!!!

Is there any reason why two HPTs would come up positive when you're not actually pregnant? I'm seeing my GP tomorrow for a blood test, and hopefully a referral for an ultrasound, but this just cannot be happening. it's impossible. Just impossible.

As they say, you are never really ready for a baby. You will find your feet.

Are you on any medications at all? Medications containing hCG can cause a false negative...

Have you or haven't you had sex? If you actually haven't ha sex in three months, then you can't be pregnant. If you have had sex at least once in the past three months, then you could be. I'm presuming 'we haven't had sex in three months' is a bit of an exaggeration, because otherwise you wouldn't have taken the test?

A few mess can cause false positives, but it's not common! Congrats! Don't worry, everything else will fall into place!

Well if you really haven't had sex in 3 months and have had bloods and u/s done during that time that say not pregnant then it probably is wrong. Sometimes the body can play tricks on you. I would wait for a blood result, otherwise if you have had sex then you probably are pregnant.

Why did you even decide to do a HPT if you havn't had sex in 3 months?

No, unfortunately it has actually been about three months. A bit of a dry spell over here right now.

I took the test as I've just felt like crap for the last month, and I thought I'd do it to rule it out for my own peace of mind. Didn't expect this!

I had faint postitives on several tests last year, and i was definitely not pregnant. Turned out to be, some hormonal issues!

Is it possible you had sex, but forgot ???

Did the blood tests for pcos include hcg? I wouldn't think they would, so a  pregnancy could have been missed by the bloods.......when did you have the ultrasound? Maybe it was too early for anything to be obvious and they would have been focusing on your ovaries.....

Sounds to me like you must be pregnant, and you've skipped the whole first tri!

Are you seeing your GP today?

It's not impossible to fall pregnant with PCOS it can just be more difficult due to irregular cycles etc. I have PCOS and autoimmune thyroid diseases and still managed to fall pregnant twice without assistance other than thyroid medication.

How early on were your blood tests/ ultrasounds in the last 3 months. An external ultrasound might have missed an early pregnancy especially as they generally focus on the ovaries and the tests for PCOS wouldn't have looked at HCG unless your Dr specifically requested them which they often do to rule it out but again it may have just been too early. So there is a chance you could be 3 months pregnant!

Yes, I'm seeing her this morning. I'll update when I know anything, which I don't suppose will be until bloods come back in the next couple of days.

So you at thinking that your 3+ months pregnant? I'd go have a scan today... a little bubba should be very clear if you are that far along!

Hcg results can be done almost straight away.  I would be asking for urgent action.  How bizzare for you.

FWIW, I've never heard of a false positive except with people taking drugs for IVF/fertility treatment.

Watching for updates.

I would love to try and have one today, it's just a matter of finding somewhere that might be able to fit me in - I also know nothing about this, could it just be at a general ultrasound place or are they usually done somewhere more specialised, like Sydney Ultrasound for Women?

I had my NT (12 week scan) done at a specialist place, but the rest were just at the regular local one.

Almost any ultrasound place can do prenatal ones, you might need someone specifically trained though. If you are in Sydney I'm sure you'll be able to find a place. Also, it doesn't matter where your referral is for, you can take any referral to an scan place and they can use it. How exciting!
