So, WDYT?  I've loved it for a while, DH has come on board.  (I'm not pregnant or planning, but just in case wink.gif)

Keeping in mind that we are fairly gutsy and do love our E.European names here (check my sig) and have the cultural heritage to pull it off...  Russian variant of Basil btw.

How would you spell it?  Behind the name lists Vasily, Vasiliy, Vasili.

Any biblical middle name suggestions?

I like it, but have no idea how I would spell it! Russian is not my strong suit wink.gif. I think I like the look of Vasili best.

I automatically assumed Wassily - as in Kandinsky.

Not totally my style, but I do think it's a name that will grow on people.  I do however, love one of your children's middle names - Micah. wub.gif wub.gif wub.gif wub.gif wub.gif

I liked it for our son

I agree, I think it looks weird ending in Y. I think because it reminds me of Vasiliki, ending in I looks better.

I don't know why but Vasily spelt like that looks feminine to me. I love the spelling Vasili though!

I'm so embarrassed I had to google Kandinsky countrymel - it was ringing little bells but...  AFAIcan tell Kandinsky was raised in the Ukraine where they use the W instead of V.  I prefer the V.  It's not a bad association though!
His middle name is no help, Wassilyevich!  That's one russian tradition I'm not adopting.  biggrin.gif

DH thought the main association would be with Zaytsev, soviet sniper (the movie Enemy at the Gates), but I think that's just in his online gaming world.

Thanks Bel, I forgot to list the other variant of Vassily.  Is it crazy to lean towards Vasiliy or Vassily because they have 7 letters like my DS1's name?   ph34r.gif

Thanks for all the replies!  Seems I ending is popular, not sure how I feel about that  tongue.gif

I'm not sure I'd know how to pronounce it....is it similar to "Vaseline"?  That what was first came to my mind.

vah-SEE-lee

I would go Vasili or Vasiliy, and give Vassily a miss, personally.

I know a ton of Russians between family and the neighborhood I grew up in, and aside from those who hit English speaking shores and instantly became Vincent or Victor to everyone they met, I've known it spelt the first two ways.

I am thinking Basil would give Aussies less trouble but I'm not always a strong believer in giving people less trouble. original.gif That said Basil goes well with your other names.

Biblical:

Vasiliy Cyrus
Vasiliy Joel
Vasiliy Zebulon
Vasiliy Isaiah
Vasiliy Ezra
Vasiliy Asher

I guess I should ask if you meant obscure or common because there's quite the jump between like Zebulon and Thomas.

#12 leisamd

Posted 23 February 2012 - 09:21 AM

come on la di dah - the more obscure the better!  Thanks for your thoughts on the spellings, can I ask why you don't like the double s?

DH doesn't like Basil, he struggles with names that are things.  We looked at both Vincent and Victor with DS2, my IL's just can't get past the Fast Forward victor and DH hates the aussie accented victor (victa - the lawnmower).  Vincent would get shortened to vince which I don't'like.

My favourite biblical boys names are Eleazar and Obadiah (I adore Joel but DH vetoed)

DH's fave is Enoch.

Because I think, and I mean this with all love to them because my husband who I adore has the thickest Westie accent in the world - that many many Aussies will make Vassily into VASS-ih-lee or VAIZ-uh-lee and not vah-SEE-lee. With that real hard piercing nasality.

Oh, obscure, all right, well now the genie is out of the bottle. Eleazar is really good, btw. I took Malachi out despite my love for it because you have a Micah.

Vasiliy Jabez
Vasiliy Josiah
Vasiliy Amos
Vasiliy Zachariah/Zacharias
Vasiliy Jethro
Vasiliy Judah
Vasily Samson
Vasily Nehemya/Nechemya/Nehemiah (I like Nehemya pronunciation the best but I think the most common is Nehemiah)

Not as good on New Testament but I've got:
Vasiliy Thaddeus
Vasiliy Silas
Vasiliy Bartholomew - I like this but best kept as a MN at all times, I feel, away from the Bart nickname.

That's it, that's all I hear when I suggest Victor - pity.  sad.gif

Yes, la di dah, darn this accent!  I hope though if we say it right it won't bother me too much, I really don't think it will make or break this name for us.

It was a Micah/Malachi toss up for DS2, I won with Micah though.  biggrin.gif

Thaddeus is all kinds of awesome.

Countrymel, you're making me google too much!  Must say I'm not up to speed on british politics, my Enoch association is the biblical one - and it's a good one.

"Mr Vasily, one ping. One ping only, please."

An oft used quote in this house from The Hunt for Red October....

Quite like it as a name, but wouldn't use it as we have a Vaclav as a close relation already.

#20 la di dah

Incidentally, do you like Dmitri/Dmitriy/Dmitry? I love it, and Demetrius as well.

I don't know who Enoch Powell is.

I do admit I rank Enoch well below my love for Ezra, Ezekiel, Eleazer, Ephraim, Eli, and Elijah, but it's not bad.

What about Emmanuel? I don't like it as a first name because I'm not into Manny but I like the name itself.

#21 leisamd

Posted 23 February 2012 - 12:33 PM

Love Dimitri, just never felt quite right though - it doesn't go too well with our surname (starts with D)

I'm with you on Enoch, but my DH keeps coming back to it.  Eleazar could also be Lazarus and I'd still love it.

I'm a bit meh on emmanuel myself, I don't mind it.

I know someone who calls her son "Vas" and I've never been able to work out what his full name might be. I guess that could be it. It makes me think of 'vas deferens' - the part of the male anatomy!  huh.gif Maybe that's just me though...

Can't say I like it either. Agree it looks and sounds feminine especially with the y ending (I'd go for i ending if you have to have it), and everyone is likely to mispronounce it VASSily whether you spell it with one or two 'S's, in my opinion.

ETA Vaseline was my first though too. Sorry.

I like it - Vasily is probably my favourite of the spelling options, it just looks more straightforward.
