Hi ladies,

Need some advice...
DH got a sperm analysis done back in April this year.  His morphology results came back at only 4% normal sperm.  Our FS never said this was an issue.  Since then we have moved states and I have a new FS now...and yesterday when he looked at the results, he said 4% was quite low.

I am very confused as from what I have read 4% is normal... so not sure... Has anyone's DH had 4% normal sperm and still fallen pregnant naturally??  The FS said that if after 3 more rounds of Clomid (I ovulate naturally, using Clomid to just have extra eggs and more chances of falling pregnant), if I was pregnant to go for IVF.  I fell pregnant in my first cycle of Clomid but it resulted in a M/C sad.gif

I have got DH on Menevit now - has anyone found that it improves Sperm Morphology?  Also, is the zinc in Menevit enough or should I also get DH to take zinc tablets separately?

Thanks ladies for your advice.
Wishing everyone sticky BFPs!!! original.gif

Hi,

Yep anything over 3% is considered normal and YES Menevit does help improve my DH went from 0% Morphology to 7% on the next test after Menevit and has only gone up from there

The WHO manual for sperm assessment changed the parameters for sperm morphology with it's new 5th edition.
In the 5th edition anything 4% and above is considered normal, whereas in previous editions 15% was considered normal.

So i guess it depends which edition the FS is used to working with, whether he considers that result to be 'normal' or low.

No idea on the menevit or zinc requirements.

Thanks for replyign Red31.  How long did it take for your DH's morphology to improve?  Had he been on Menevit long?  I am worried as the bottle says you should take Menevit 90 days before trying and as we only have 3 cycles, and DH has just begun it 3 weeks ago, is that ok?

It's sad, cuz DH is so healthy..has never smoke nor drinks alcohol ..yet he has this issue...

I'm in a totally different situation to you, we're TTC after a vasectomy reversal, and were told it keeps improving up to 18 months after, so take what you want from this info original.gif

DH's first SA came back with 15% normal forms. He's been taking Menevit since the reversal in Feb. He also takes other supplements, but thats mainly for low motility.
2nd SA was 21% normal forms. 3 months after.

ETA it takes around 3 months for the sperm to go from immature in the testes, to mature sperm in the ejaculate. Thats why it says 90 days. But theres no harm in trying before that original.gif

Yes it's considered normal.
My DH was on menevit and then changed to spermaxx (yes silly name!) his results were much better after taking spermaxx compared to menevit

We did 5 clinic cycles and got a BFP on our 5th cycle.

I think morph also depends on who is testing the sample - some are stricter than others.

Also agree with Red (Hi Red  waves.gif ) and the others that Menevit does improve pretty much everything.  I just had my DH do a second SA, he has been on Menivit for 6 months, everything improved and his DNA frag was down at 2%....

this
wouldnt have passed as "normal" a year ago
i'm not entirely sure all this lowering of normal numbers is a good thing or not

i'v always been told its 15% or higher is normal  but i havent done any AC for 8mths

My hubby also has 96% abnormal morphology and we were told the same thing that any less than 15% is no longer considered normal fertility.
Our FS has said that if he gets a similar result in december then we will need to consider IVF. Was your partner 100% well at the time of his test though because our FS said that even a cold around the time of testing can influence it. We were also told that only lifestyle factors make a difference and that vitamins etc dont do much but he is takins spermmax anyway and he's cut right down on the drinking too.

Good luck with getting the morphology count up! but remember 4% of millions is still a lot of swimmers original.gif

Thanks ladies for the replies!

From memory, DH was perfectly well when he got his SA done.

I guess we will just keep on with Menevit..and see how it goes.
Does anyone know what the recommended intake for zinc is?
I am wondering if I should get him to go on zinc tablets as well as menevit.
Menevit has 25mg of zinc per tablet...

Hi Fingers.crossed.
I initially started this topic...a few months back..

DH has been taking Menevit since then so nearly 4 to 5 months now...
He had an SA done about a month back and there was no difference in his results..

However, our FS has told him to continue taking Menevit...
We are now embarking on the journey of IVF and doing ICSI...so hopefully it works!

Good Luck original.gif

Hi *fingers.crossed*!  If the SA was 94% abnormal... that's 6% normal which, as strange as it sounds, is actually a really good result for morphology!  My DH only has 3% normal morph ohmy.gif  but that's good enough because DH's teratozoospermia index (TZI) is less than 1.80. biggrin.gif

There's a lot of out of date info out there on the net, but the most up to date studies says that whether the SA was done under the Kruger criteria (also called the 'strict criteria') or the WHO standards, because the standard to which testing can now be done, many more defects are now spotted, so 4% is considered perfectly normal under both standards of test.  So, at 6%, your man is doing really well on morphology! original.gif

However, the other thing to look at is the TZI number (also called the multiple anomalies index (MAI) number).  This number is the average number of defects in each abnormal sperm.  If the average is less than 1.80, then you're fine.  If it's above that, then it will depend on what your docs thinks of all the other elements tested in the SA.

If you do want to get your man tested again though - it takes ~90-100 days for new sperm to be produced.  So you won't get any sperm that has been improved by the Menevit for quite a while yet.  But he's got a good percentage already!
