My DH has a PS4 with adult games. My DS wants to play some video games, what would you suggest for his age?

Mario Cart is on Nintendo only.
The Lego movie games are good for kids.

We have an Xbox but a lot of games are cross platform.
My two girls are 5 and 7, they play Just Dance, Overcooked (though that results in a lot of yelling at each other), they like the lego games (so do I because a lot of those are side-scrolling and in open world type games they tend to just get lost).
I tend to go to EB games and have a look through the pre-owned section for games with the G rating (green triangle) and have a read of the back of the box to see what it's all about.

Mine likes the Lego games and just dance. Plus there us a free one called doritos crash course that you can just download that gets a lot of play. Actually. That one may be only xbox. Not sure.

We have an Xbox but Skylanders and the Lego games have been all great. We had the 360 camera controller which was great until DS learnt how to use the controller properly.
EB sells the Skylander figures for 4 for $10. I assume Disney Imaginators games would be good also.
