'Most mothers of small children have back issues of some sort" says the doc- true?

Hi All,

I saw a GP about a hip/leg issue I've had for at least 6 months and is getting worse. Long story short- it could be bursitis, tendonitis, sciatica or various other things. I had my 3.5 y/o with me, and the doc was convinced it's got something to do with the repeated bending all mums do."It's not just the child-lifting, it's picking up all their crap off the floor etc".

She also said "I had 3 kids and had back pain for years". Then gave me a demonstration of lifting with your legs not your back (which sounds dumb, but fact is I already knew that but I don't do it- I tend to bend at the waist).

Am having an u/s done, then physio appointment... sigh. This better bloody work.

Do most mums have back/hip/leg pain and if so, what are all of them doing about it? I'd love to hear some personal stories!

I have never heard that before.

I have a now 6 year old and never had back problems.  Considering I was a gymnast I would expect to have, but none.

How about the weird cross lift and bend to get a kid into a car seat - that’s a killer.

Yup, don’t see why they wouldn’t.

I’ve always had a bit of upper back pain, but since DD (now 2) I have lower back pain, hip pain and shoulder pain. I see a physio and do Pilates when I can, which helps a lot.

But I also work at a desk, which doesn’t help at all!

Considering im overweight and have two small kids, my back only aches at the end of a long day.  But it does ache.

Years of Ballet taught me to use my stomach muscles, to support my core, when I bend down or even while standing or walking, and good old woolies taught me to lift with my legs and to do a golf lift. I think that all has helped me avoid worse injury.

yeah, i find its the awkward bends that are a killer, not picking stuff up off the floor.  Im short, and have short limbs, so reaching stuff is hard.  Raching into car seats, reaching into the sink to do dishes (why must the faucet be so far away???) raching into the washing machine, reaching into the bath to bathe kids.  I am constantly reaching forwards at odd angles.

Nope. No issues when my DD was little. However I do have bursitis in my hips now and an injection of cortisone brings me enormous relief for months. I also have ITB (iliotibial band) pain down my leg. But no, I didn't get back pain from picking up my child when she was little or picking up stuff from the floor.

If you have pain then there's a reason for it not just "because children".

No, not true, my rheumatologist was angry my issues had been dismissed as this for so long.

My physio is pretty sure carrying and lifting DD, who is pretty solid for her age, is the contributor. The underlying cause is just genetic predisposition, she thinks. But the heavy lifting makes it worse.

I don’t think that’s true. However, based on my recent experience if she’s trying to diagnose a back issue, you’re gonna need a CT scan.

I’ve recently been through similar to you... sorry to say I’m still having treatment nearly 5 months later and will probably require a nerve root sleeve injection and/or injection into a facet joint. I’ve already had injections into the problem hip...

Currently very pregnant with my third, with sciatica for the first time ever. One trip to the physio, with some release massage and Daily exercises fixed me right up, that very same day. I’ve previously pulled a muscle in my back, that went away after a few days. Hope your back is better soon.

Just because she has had 3 children and back pain for years doesn’t make it a standard cause of back issues for all mothers. I also have 3 children and never had any back problems.

I've had back pain for a long time, including before kids. In my case it's excess weight and laziness I'd say (I don't engage my core enough and tend to slouch). Pregnancy tends to hit me worse than little kids

Yes, compressed disc from second child. Pilates and physiotherapy have helped somewhat but it is always in the background and emerges when I renovate/garden too much or sleep on a mattress that is not mine.

The only reoccurring pain I get is wrist/elbow pain. Classic library worker ailment.

Very interesting!

Paddlepop- a few people have told me cortisone injections worked well for bursitis.

I still don't know if it IS bursitis- apparently an u/s might show this... I'll have to wait and see.

I put all my hand and wrist pain down to my second child bring such a big baby, but then my ankles started hurting too... yep it was RA.

OP - I’ve found that weekly pilates with my physio (they call it clinical movement now) is far and away the most helpful thing for my back and shoulder pain. But if there doesn’t seem to be a clear reason for what you are experiencing, have it looked into more closely by a good GP.

I have hip pain, and it is/was exacerbated by carrying children on my hip, but it is mostly the result of an old ankle injury and ongoing instability in that joint.

Earlier this year, I complained to the GP about recurring hip pain - waking me up during the night type of pain - and she said it was likely bursitis. She recommended physio and suggested it might be gait-related. I started paying attention to what shoes I wore on the days when I had it, and it was always the same pair. I haven’t worn them for ages and haven’t had any hip pain since I stopped wearing them.

Back pain here but not due to kids
Injury at 15 trying to push a trailer up a gravel driveway. Legs slipped out from under me, I literally couldn't walk for 3 days. I was actually contemplating going to the hospital which is massive for me. Day 4 I managed to start slowly walking again
Was weird, during pregnancy my back came good, within 24 hours of dd birth, the pain was back

I certainly have back pain from handling my kids. It was really severe when they were little and getting so much better now they are older.

I have had physio and find exercise helps A LOT.

Your GP sounds like they are covering all bases so that is a good start.

I think the problem here is  the 'dismissed as .....".  It is probably true that many mothers have back, neck pain.  It's been said here and many of us have experienced it.  We 'know' how to lift, but don't do it properly, and many of the things we have to do leads to bad backs.

No different to 'most nurses have bad backs'.  Again - trained in lifting, but training doesn't always suit the real life situations of moving someone from bed to toilet to wheelchair to car, and if they fall on you.

It shouldn't be dismissed though, or seen as a reason without investigation.  There are many causes for chronic pain. "having children" is only one.

Personally, my kids are teenagers and whilst I didn't have a lot of back pain when they were little, I am now have chronic shoulder pain.  Don't know why, and physio/osteo and other therapies are not helping much.

It sucks.

Dustyblue: Yes, an ultrasound will show bursitis. When the ultrasound technician does the cortisone injection into my hip he knows he's got the right spot when I start swearing in pain, or can't speak from pain, or nearly leap off the bed in pain. The needle touching the bursa freaking hurts if the bursa is irritated. Much better once the local anaesthetic goes in, and then the cortisone. I know that the pain I get for 10-15 seconds during the injection means that I'll get about 10 months relief from my bursitis, so it's worth it. Takes a few days for the relief to kick in but so much better once it does. Based on my sample size of one, bursitis can definitely be helped by a cortisone injection.

Yep I had cortisone into my hip bursa as well... much improvement on that issue.

I had back issues well before children.  My back pain was at its most minimal in the few years I was home with children.  Desk job, uni etc caused me far more issues than children.

I had back pain before kids, exceptionally bad right before my period. Back pain during pregnancy, I was seeing an osteopath with ds1 as he had he foot jammed into my rib and I was in so much pain. Back pain with little kids.

My dad has a bad back and so do all 3 of his kids. Just life for our family.
