DS's high school has mandatory BYOD for Y7+ and they have a link with JBHIFI education

there is a list of 'laptops' and I have chosen

It is what I am to believe is a think pad so note sure if this is a full laptop or a bigger version of a tablet?

Is there a reason not to buy this?

We want one that will meet whatever Y7 brings but not cost too much if he drops it etc.

I believe they have their own IT department so want to stick with the mentioned brands (HP, Apple, Lenovo) bust was thinking $600ish if possible

we will pay more if we have to but seems pointless to spend a fortune if he does need the extra bits

Think Pad is their laptop branding as opposed to a specific size.

It's quite a low end processor and only 4gb of ram, so it may struggle depending on the subjects he does, and I wouldn't expect it to last the whole of high school. I personally like Lenovo products, but that is pretty low end.

Has the school given you a list of recommended or minimum specs they'll need?

Thanks, they did but I have only been through about 3/4 of it which i think it matches.

I will look at the higher ones though

It is just he does not do much on them apart from school stuff but yes the longer he can use it for the better

If you want it to last longer then a couple of years you will need more RAM and a higher end processor. I'd likely want an i3-i5, and 6-8GB RAM.

Don't worry so much about built in memory, that what external hard drives and cloud storage is for. Thinkpad is just the range name.
