If you have high school kids, what types of comments do you like most? Do you like specific comments relating to how your child is overall in class? Or referring to specific assessments? etc.

I'm just writing my reports now, and i'm wondering what parents find most useful as a few teacher friends and I were debating on which parts of reports we found most useful (in regard to comments) and it was quite varied.

So, what do you find most useful for comments?

I like to know what areas my child can improve in. Even if they receive top grades there are always things they can work on.

I really appreciate it when the teacher makes an observation about my child that indicates that they know and understand something about them as a person and a learner. I probably take the comments more seriously when I can tell they ‘get’ my child.

Definitely prefer something constructive rather than the generic cut and paste.

I would like to know what should be their focus for the coming year in terms of development. And they are more receptive to hearing that when the teacher has also made a positive comment on what they are doing now.

What he needs to improve in mainly, sure if he is doing good in something it is nice to hear BUT not useful as such.

If there are major exams such as end of year one the result for that would be good unless we already have been told it.

But the most important thing is for them to be written in normal speak and not like a corporate robot has written it.

Basically reports should serve a purpose for us to know what we can help him or what he should be doing himself to help in future.

(I may add to this when i think of more)

I've been surprised that my kids high school reports have more useful comments than primary school ones.

Eg math teacher saying that child was getting by on natural ability (good grade) but would need additional work ethic to continue this grade in following year. Or English teaching stating that spelling was poor (never previously been commented on, but is poor) and would benefit from editing work.

I would rather one sentence that shows the teacher actually knows my child then a paragraph of copy and paste comments. I don't mind what that looks like as we have continuing access to assignments and teacher comments via our online platform throughout the year, so reports are no surprise here.

What about for mandatory subjects outside of standard classes. So subjects like Art, Tech, Music, Languages etc.
Do you look at comments? What types of comments would you be most interested in, especially if your kid isn't going to continue with that subject

I would also prefer a shorter sentence that showed the teacher knew my kid rather than the cut and paste crap.

I know it was cut and paste because it had another kids name on it and it didn’t happen just once.

Based on this experience I rarely read the comments now days.

I like it when it’s clear that the teacher actually knows who my child is.

I’d also like for the teacher to be realistic in their comments, focussing on where said child is in relation to the achievement standard. The comment should also reflect the grade (my personal fave this year was a comment describing my child as ‘struggling’ yet had achieved a B grade...).

Not what you asked but... please don't say that my kid with ADHD needs to focus more. He gets this from a couple of teachers EVERY time. Really frustrating.

Mine are only in primary school but this is really important and I imagine it will still be in high school. Is there anything they are struggling with or need help with.

I love to know weaknesses.  There might be something simple they would benefit doing,  to support their learning. E.g learn specific technical knowledge.

A student may do well in math but fractions could be an area which would benefit from extra attention.

Connecting with the work/topics. Are they just sitting there or are they contributing.  

Is the effort there?  A student with excellent grades could be just cruising and a student with terrific effort could be struggling to keep up.

Music - can play the flute nicely but struggles reading the required music to play

Art - works well on his own but needs to improve working on a team project

History - is very good at the remembering events but struggles with turning them into essays

that type of thing is useful

(mind you I don't think my son has even played the flute)

Then we can help him work on reading music, writing essays and how to help in a team.

Our school use a program whereby every single result is communicated to parents via an App. The downside for teachers is every result needs to be loaded into the App. The upside is that it then automatically populates the report. If a subject is broken down into units or areas where results are assigned to an area then this information is all auto-populated into the report. So you can see your child is strong with trigonometry but average with integers or strong in comprehension but poor in essays for example.

It also gives your child’s overall result for that subject as a percentage on the number line with the year average also indicated. If there was a mid-year or end year exam for that subject you also get that as a number line with your child’s result on it and the year average indicated so you can see where they sit compared to the rest of the year or subject cohort if it’s senior subject related.

So, results are pre-populated and teachers need to enter a comment for each subject. They have very obviously been told they must use an upside down traffic light system. So you get a positive comment, what they should keep doing and what they need to work on.

Don’t recall getting them for Yr12 so think we only get reports to Yr11, will refresh memory when the last goes through.
