So if you had a choice what would you have under a trampoline, grass, concrete, mulch, something else?
In a sunny are of the yard. Thanks! #2Posted 14 October 2019 - 08:36 PM
Mulch - grass tends to die under trampolines because of the lack of sunlight, so you might as well put mulch or bark chips underneath it.
Not concrete, even with a net around it, kids tend to come out the zip forwards and someone WILL fall off it and hit their face on the ground. #3Posted 14 October 2019 - 08:43 PM
If cost were no object, I’d use that good quality soft fall stuff. Not the loose stuff like rubber wood chips but the foamy mat stuff.
It’s easy to blow leaves and crap out, doesn’t grow weeds, doesn’t get mushy, doesn’t get hot and reflective and doesn’t make that annoying thumping sound like a trampoline on concrete. I’ve had a trampoline bolted to a concrete pad (gets hot). I’ve had a trampoline on grass (grass dies and is a haven for unwanted critters). I’ve had a trampoline on mulch (mulch gets on kids and ends up in the house). I’ve had a trampoline under planted with clivias and banned the kids from going under. Clivias looked good until they were trampled by kids crawling through them and I freaked out over the snake I saw. We currently have no trampoline. #4Posted 14 October 2019 - 08:45 PM
We have good quality fake grass. It is not as nice as grass but grass never seems to grows well under tramps, or you have to move it to mow etc etc. the faux grass looks good from afar or if i squint and the kids love crawling under there and playing.

Grass.
We just out the sprinkler under the trampoline to water it. Kids jump in the trampoline with the sprinkler going. Tramps are easy to use to mow. I would never have a tramp in concrete. Mulch would be too messy for me. So grass it is. Edited by ~J_F~, 14 October 2019 - 09:13 PM. #6Posted 14 October 2019 - 09:14 PM
Ours is on the grass and the patch underneath seems to grow well as the kids aren’t running over it all the time, the patch right at the ladder got a bit soggy over winter. We move it around so it’s not always in the same spot anyway.

The two of three families I know have theirs on grass. But their lawn is big enough to move the tramp periodically. The last has theirs on concrete slabs. Their youngest broke his collarbone falling out of it.
If I was going to get one (never gonna happen, sorry kids!) it would go on grass if I had space to move it. Or I’d potentially shell out for soft fall. Not wood chips for us personally, my kids would play with them and make a huge mess and probs get splinters. #8Posted 15 October 2019 - 01:50 AM
We have just gone through all the options and are going to put ours on compressed granitic sand. We don’t mind the look of it and because it compacts to a hard surface there is not as much mess as normal sand. We did want a cost effective option though.
We ruled out mulch because of mess. Concrete is expensive. Grass is too hard to maintain, mainly mowing. Fake grass was an option but expensive and in our yard would be right next to our real grass, so didn’t think it would look good. I think if money was no object we would do a kids area in the rubber flooring, like that gets used at playgrounds. #9Posted 15 October 2019 - 06:05 AM
Our miscellaneous weeds are thriving and lush!

We had a tropical paradise of long grass and flowering weeds. Who knew that it was the perfect conditions for growing in our climate?! We struggled with mowing under it - trampoline was screwed into the ground due to wind, so unable to move to mow. We ended up mulching very thickly and spot spraying and weeding when needed.

I've tried to move ours periodically as it is on grass, but it's been where it is for the last 6 months or so. The lack of rain meant it wasn't worthwhile trying to keep anything alive under it.
I'll move it next time. If it could only be in one spot, probably mulch for cost and ease - and it's much cooler than rubber. #12Posted 15 October 2019 - 08:17 AM
Our grass does better in the shade under the trampoline - burnt by the sun otherwise. We do drag it round the yard a bit though.
Concrete or other really hard surface is bad for the trampoline as well as any kids landing on it - the vibrations can slowly weaken and damage the joins #13Posted 15 October 2019 - 03:22 PM
Ours is on grass, we have lots of space so it gets moved around for mowing. The grass under ours is always greener and thicker than elsewhere

We have a thick layer of black barkchip under ours. Plus a reasonable amount of weeds. Both match the rest of the garden. No issues with it being traipsed inside. Grass is adjacent to the bark chips

we have grass under our tramp. Very lush, seems to thrive.

I’ll also add, our trampoline is way too big and heavy to be moving about, so a dedicated spot was needed. Plus we love in a very windy area where trampolines are known to go neighbour hopping on bad days.

DS’s trampoline is on grass. I let it grow underneath to pick for our guinea pigs.

Eta: I'd go grass Edited by Kallie88, 15 October 2019 - 06:09 PM. #19Posted 15 October 2019 - 07:19 PM
We have grass under ours which grows just fine. I mow under it when doing the lawns. I have to fold the handles of the mower down to slide under the trampoline to get to the grass in the centre.

I have some sort of pressed rock under mine, it gets heaps of weeds.
My exSIL/BIL had theirs in the ground. #21Posted 15 October 2019 - 08:06 PM
Chickens, chicken poop and cat poop.
We had grass, it died, the chickens dug it all up so it became dirt and weeds. The cat was using it as a toilet so I put weed mat and mulch. The chickens dug that too. I put some plants around the edge to soften it and hide the dirt. Now I just ignore it. #22Posted 15 October 2019 - 08:07 PM
Just on grass. We rotate it around.

We have an area of fake grass for the trampoline and other play equipment.

We have mulch with some stepping stones leading up to it.
