Getting 2yo to eat real food

It’s the eternal question, right?

DD apparently eats well at daycare. At home, she’ll eat well with things she likes. Unfortunately, she doesn’t like that much.

She eats most fruits, most carbs. Almost no meat (occasional fish cake, likes the cashew chicken from the local Chinese). No veggies, apart from anything I can sneak in. Loves eggs.

I’m worried she’s not getting enough iron/protein. Any tips?

My DS is still kind of vegetarian at 5. I think it’s OK, just try and get protein from other sources.

Sounds pretty normal to me
If she’s eating a good lunch at daycare I wouldn’t worry too much
I think young kids tend to be pretty tired by dinner and not eat that well, so it makes sense to have a good “hot” meal at lunch time
Eggs and fish cakes are great and no problem with eating them every day !

I have an almost two and half year old DS, and only recently has he started eating well at dinner. What I have found works is to get him to help set the table (bring out the spoons and placemats, and anything else non breakable) and then serve everyone at the table, making a big show of "some for Daddy, some for Mummy, now some for you". We also do things where he can add grated cheese or natural yoghurt topping, or peas and corn on the side, so he feels like he has some control.

He loves rice so we eat a lot of that, but I try to vary what we have with it. So he has the rice that he is familiar with, but then tries something new too.

A few good non-meat iron/protein sources:
  • Weetbix (2 weetbix = 37% of adult iron RDI)
  • Iron-fortified bread - e.g. Wonder White + Iron (2 slices = 25% of adult iron RDI)
  • Cashews.  If your DD likes cashew chicken, you could try cashew spread on toast.
  • Rolled oats.
  • Chickpeas, if she will eat hummus on crackers.
  • Baked beans.

We're vegetarian and my DD is the same age, although she's always been a good eater so feel free to ignore any suggestions :yes:.  What works for us is a lot of tasting plates for dinner, especially on daycare days.  Protein options include cold boiled egg, cheese slice/cubes, hummus on crackers, falafels (we use the Yumi brand ones, especially the vegie bites ones which are less grainy than traditional falafels) or black beans/kidney beans/cannellini beans straight from the can after rinsing (they're all pretty bland and make good finger food).  You can then add any fruit or salad vegies that she might eat or you would like her to try.  We also do a lot of eggs for dinner too (omelettes, egg and avocado on toast, etc).    

Also, our childcare is happy to provide its recipes to parents.  Not sure if that might help if there's stuff she's eating there that you would like to try at home too?
