Functional medicine- advice needed for insomnia

Has anybody had any success seeing a functional medicine doctor? Especially in Sydney?

I am suffering from severe and debilitating insomnia resulting in a complete inability to sleep at all and I am slowly losing my mind. I’ve tried all the conventional medicine and some alternative therapies with no luck. I am desperate. I also have a chronic autoimmune disease and I’m so desperate to find some help.

I’m a fairly skeptical person though and don’t want to throw away thousands of dollars on “woo”. If you have have any experiences you wouldn’t mind sharing I’d be so grateful. Also if you have any doctor recommendations based in a sydney.

I'm sorry,  I don't have any rec'd but I couldn't not reply - that level of insomnia would be absolute torture! Even mild insomnia is so disruptive.
I wish I had an answer for you.  Do you have any support during the day? How are you functioning??

I am struggling to function. I have a supportive husband but that’s about it. I’m really hanging on by a thread.

Oh OP, that's awful.
The only thing I can think to do, if no one has rec'd for a Dr on here,  is to call a university based sleep clinic or just start calling functional med Dr wherever and see if they know a Sydney based one. Long shot and sounds dumb I know, but if you're desperate?!

I am very cynical and suspicious of naturopathy in the main, and would put a "functional medicine practitioner' in that category.

I don't know anything about their insomnia clinic, but I have worked with them in respiratory research, and found them very professional, reputable, etc.

I am currently under the care of the Woolcock pp. I’m just not having much luck and was hoping for some other ideas. Thank you everyone for your responses I truly appreciate it.

I am also cynical and would normally not ever consider functional medicine...but desperate times see my searching for desperate measures.

‘Functional Medicine’ is quackery and woo. So you will be throwing away your money on placebos at best.

I am not in Sydney, but hopefully other posters can recommend some reputable sleep clinics.

Thanks pp. I thought as much. I’ve just gone to the reputable sleep clinic and it hasn’t worked and I’m living in no sleep and am running out of options. Thank you for taking the time to respond.

I have been there after my third child. I tried everything - medicated and non medicated . Valium and temazepam worked for a while but then your body becomes used to it. I am ok now. The clincher that worked was I started taking anti depressants not for depression but as an anxiety alleviant. I don’t have anxiety per se but I probably did have some sort of subliminal anxiety from my job and then unusual new baby anxiety. I absolutely did not want to start taking it but I was willing to try anything - it’s worked wonders for my insomnia and I am just in the lowest dose available.

I'm another one who is on a small dose of a/d for other purposes and it has helped my chronic insomnia.

I am not a nutritionist or a GP practicing functional or integrated medicine. However I have seen it help many people. It is not a quick fix. Usually it is helpful as your whole lifestyle is looked at as well as nutrition, hormone levels, adrenal function etc. Most integrative GPs get further training through conferences such as ACNEM.

I hope you get some help OP. Insomnia sucks, I live it too and it is torture but FM is not the way to go.

I am on anti depressants to try and help but haven’t had any luck. I just get worse  day by day and week by week. I don’t know what’s the matter with me but I was a previously healthy person and now my life is like a total nightmare.

I really empathise with you. Insomnia is truly awful and debilitating. It’s bizarre as you are dead on your feet but yet can’t sleep. I have nothing else to offer as it seems like you have tried it all. I hope there is an appropriate medical specialist that you can be referred to that can help.

ETA - perhaps try different anti depressants . There are many types that work different ways. I took effexor

I saw an integrative GP a couple of years ago. What I found was their ‘solutions’ were quite woo and lacked any evidence base. However, they did far far far more thorough testing than my GP did/would do and it actually enabled me to go back and show the results and then opt for the medically based treatments.

huge hugs OP. I suffered very chronic and severe insomnia throughout 2 of 3 pregnancies (sleeping 5-10 mins per night) and was on quite high doses of restavit by the end. It worked well, but every month or so I’d need to up my dose

I’ve tried restavit, I’ve tried hypnotherapy, I’ve tried 2 different antidepressants, acupuncture, CBT and insomnia clinic, temazapam and stillnox. All to no avail. I think I’m coming to the conclusion that there really isn’t any help left for me. It’s a fairly scary prospect. Thank you everyone for your suggestions, they are appreciated more than you could ever know.

have you tried magnesium? there are different types, and different people find different types works better. generally magnesium glycinate is supposed to help with sleep, but not for all people. jigsaw health magnow drink powder has helped us. also baths or footbaths with either magnesium chloride flakes or epsom salts, and bicarb soda. another alternative is magnesium oil which you rub on the soles of your feet.  it may not cure insomnia, but it can be a step towards healing.

Functional medicine is not all quackery and woo. There are some charlatans I'm sure but not everyone.

It's worth a visit and hearing what they have to say I think.

Some can help.

There must be a problem that can be solved.
Whether it is physiological or psychological there has to be a reason this is happening.
Mine is pain......
To not have any problems you can establish which are causing your insomnia is a problem.

Is all well in your life otherwise LBM ?

Having no sleep is unsustainable, especially when there are children to care for.
Do you have a Fitbit that would enable you to track your pattern and present it to your GP.

I am thinking it may be time for a referral to a physician if you do not believe there to be any psychological reason.

Where's the data that magnesium is absorbed with topical application?

I have an autoimmune disease - insomnia seems to be wildly common for people with mine, so maybe yours is similar? Probably less discussed by doctors and more by others with the same disease.

I don't want to be a big jerk and start offering more suggestions, as you have clearly been dealing with this for a while and have tried so many things.  As you're already on anti-depressants, you may have already tried this but there is a new AD that works to reset cicardian rhythms - maybe you could talk to the sleep clinic or your treating Dr about this?

There must be something, someone can do to help you.

That's not the way science and pharmacology works.
