Flabby abs

Hi,

I'm 8.5 weeks postpartum. My stomach has excess skin and is flabby. I don't have any folds and my skin is not crinkley, but definitely flabby. I've started working out two weeks ago, including doing ab work. But I feel that I am not really targeting the problem. I think I need something different then what I used to do pre pregnancy. Any advice on how to get rid of that flab?

Pilates.

I did reformer pilates every week day for 18 months after my second was born. It is gentle enough for the post partum body but really gets into your core.

Then I upped it to F45.

Give it time. Take it easy with the ab exercises, it can frequently make things worse post partum. Give your body some time to recover first.

Go and get checked out by a specialist women's physio. They can check to make sure that your abdominal muscles are not separated. If they separated any ab work is likely to make this worse. It's also important to check your pelvic floor is ready if returning to exercise soon after  pregnancy, it's not always obvious when it's not functioning to its full. Again, doing the wrong exercises if your pelvic floor is not ready can make things worse.

It's often better not to rely on trainers to assess you, it really is a specialist area.

After getting the all clear from my physio, I started yoga which has been great I've been doing it for a year and has made a huge difference even though I've not lost the hugest amount of actual weight. I did a pilates class last week and there was stuff I had to skip completely as my pelvic floor just wasn't up to doing those types of exercises, but it really is up to what works for you.

Excess and floppy stretched skin will not be altered in any way by exercise. You sound as though you are talking about skin and not your abdominal muscles.

The only way to rid yourself of floppy and overstretched skin that is left over after recovering from having a baby is surgically which is pretty OTT for most women.

OP is only 2 months, if that,  post birth though STBG. Yes exercise doesn't affect skin but I know my tummy looked flabbier until I sorted out my abdominal separation and strengthened my core, and lost some weight. My youngest is now 4 and it's still improving. Unlike the OP my skin is crinkly and always will be, but it definitively looks less flabby due to the changes in the muscle shapes underneath. As an added bonus, sorting out my core now means I don't get consistent back ache.

8.5 weeks is still super early. I'm with others take extreme care with abs exercises especially and consider seeing a post natal physio to assess pelvic floor plus abdominal separation- you can do a lot of damage doing the wrong exercise too soon post partum.

I was the same after all 3 kids- it'll likely disappear eventually, just needs more time. Good luck and go easy on yourself :)
