How horrible.

Don't read the Facebook comments. Whoever thinks this country doesn't have a racism problem are very wrong.

You can't attribute the actions of one or two people to the whole white race. But I haven't read any FB comments about it.

It's a terrible thing to happen anywhere. Were they targeting Muslims? I'm ignorant to religion. Happy for people to practice, just don't drag me into it.

From the Guardian

'No one in NZ must go to a mosque under any circumstances,' says police commissioner

Police commissioner Mike Bush has warned: “No one in the country must go to a mosque under any circumstances.”

That is extraordinary! Does this mean that there are further attacks planned? Across the entire country of New Zealand? That's ghastly!

I'm trying to imagine being banned from my church, if there was a shooting at a different church, and I'm just gutted. I'd want to gather with my congregation, and I imagine Muslims feel the same. This is awful!

I’ve only just heard. This is utterly heartbreaking.

I think the situation is so fluid that they cannot guarantee other mosques won’t be targeted so playing it safe. They seem to be sying another person is involved that has not been caught yet.

Love Jacinda, her press conference was good.  The right mix of empathy, authority, care and responsibility.  Wish our pollies could follow her lead.

Some people don't hesitate when a muslim is involved.

This is a terrorist attack.
Who would they be targeting in an attack on Mosques?

It’s just devastating. I used to live in Christchurch and have been in touch with friends most of whom are in Lockdown at their workplace or waiting for their children who are in Lockdown in their schools. None of them can believe it.
Christchurch has had such a rough time already. People don’t need this.
I wish those shooters would have just quietly killed themselves if that was their intention. Leave poor innocent people alone!

Some people, but not everyone.

I'm assuming Muslim but there was a Jewish guy on the news and I don't know where they pray.

Jews attend a synagogue. If it’s a mosque is an attack on Islam.

I tho k it’s time we started attributing the actions of one or two to all the whites - considering that’s what we do when it’s one or two black men or one or two Islamic terrorists.

Most gunmen who shoot up public places like concerts, hotels and mosques these days are white men actually. White men have a problem with violence.

What?

A death toll of 27 was just mentioned.

Never mind- my question was answered.

There are schools in lockdown still. It's 5pm over there and it happened at 1:45pm their time. I hope they organize psychologists for the kids on Monday.

I have not seen one mention of the word ‘terrorist’ yet in the media. Very telling.

There was also one sickening report of a white man driving up to the scene, getting out and saying ‘I’m here to celebrate’ before taking off. But yeh, let’s #notallwhitepeople this thing hey PP?

Jacinda has just blown the roof off my esteem with her comments on this. I am an official fan girl, she’s incredible.

My thoughts are with the families and communities of these victims.

Guess the media needs to remind everyone that all white people shouldn't be blamed...just like they do when there is a Muslim terrorist.

ETA - maybe it's not called a terrorist attack because it can't be linked to a group?

They have named the person in custody. Brenton Tarrant.

Plus two more men and a woman.

Sky News is reporting that two mosques were targeted by three men and one woman.
All four are in custody.
The Commissioner is giving a press conference.
I'm so sorry, Christchurch.

here is the meaning of terrorism for you. And it can be cause by individuals or groups, it isn't something related to groups only. Call it what it is. But nope, can't call it that because it's a white man... You don't think the threat of being massacred while going to a place of worship to practice your faith isn't a threat or terror?

Terrorism is, in the broadest sense, the use of intentionally indiscriminate violence as a means to create terror among masses of people

When people at my work found out were astounded. Saying that things like this don't happen in NZ.

So a terror cell.

This Sunday is Mosque Open in Melbourne. Presuming it still goes ahead, 21 mosques will be open, and would probably welcome a show of solidarity from any visitors.

Four people are now in custody - 1 of which is a woman. One of the arrested was wearing explosives. A vehicle in Strickland St has now been made apparently safe and had multiple IED's on it.

Utter scum. So many innocent people have had their lives destroyed by the actions of this group.

I've heard several stories already of heroism, both of the Police/Armed Forces and also the general public.

A very sad day.

You can't be serious.
I hate to use the word but your posts show ignorance.

white supremacy absolutely should be blamed. it’s time to realise white supremacy isn’t simply about “freedom of speech” - it’s about actions, it’s dead bodies, it’s fear in the streets. it’s terrorism.

how horrific, my heart goes out to all who are affected.

Holy sh*t...

I don’t even know what to say really.

All those people terrified :(

Jesus it annoys me when they won’t use the word terrorism to describe an attack like this when the perp is white!!
