Preventing stretch marks?

Hi guys!
This is my first pregnancy and I am keen to hear some tips on avoiding/minimising stretch marks. What to do? When to start? I'm 7w5d.

I've heard that there is a significant genetic factor in determining whether or not you get stretch marks, however I used Bio Oil during my pregnancy and my stretch marks weren't too bad. It can't hurt to start using it now  :)

I used bio oil with my first and got lots of stretch marks... tummy, thighs, above my hips on my back and boobs. They pretty much all disappeared though. I didn't use anything with my second pregnancy and got a lot less stretch marks. DD is 8 months and there are still a few lingering about.
I've also heard genetics play the biggest role, but I also put on a lot more weight in my first pregnancy, so maybe that was the difference?

Get the right parents! Really, it's down to genetics and your skin type.

I did nothing much in the way of stretch mark creams etc and never got one. Pure luck.
They will fade if you do get them though, so don't panic.

Yep, I've also heard that it's mostly genetics. I got stretch marks on my hips and bum at puberty, and I didn't put anything on my skin. When I was pregnant, I didn't put anything on my skin and didn't get any stretch marks on my tummy. I therefore assume I'm genetically prone to stretch marks on my hips and bum and not on my tummy.

Another vote for genetics.

I didn't moisturise, and didn't get any at all... until my c-section. I was so disappointed to discover all these bright red marks from where they'd pulled my skin to get DD out. They've faded to nothing now though.

In my experience, getting your baby to come out on their due date helps. Mine all appeared after he was a week overdue. I think weight gain has a lot to do with it.

I had none at 37w2d when DH took photos of my belly. I had lots at 37w5d when DS1 arrived. Literally an overnight development.

As PP said genetics and weight gain/speed of weight gain. I have stretch marks on my breasts/hips/thighs from my development as a tween.

Sorry to tell you this... If you are going to get them, you are going to get them and there is nothing you can do to avoid it.

But having said that, keep creams handy as it will help with the itching when the stretchmarks start to appear.

As PP have said skin type/Gentics is the major factor that influences whether you get stretch marks or not but to prevent them it 'might' help if you gain weight slowly and not gain too much weight.....of course this is not always within our control.

No amounts of putting oils on our skin will stop them despite serious marketing otherwise. :)
The stretch mark is a scar from a tear in a deeper layer so the oil will do nothing more than make the skin feel moisturised and soft.

The only stretch marks I got was along my caesar scar after my second pregnancy.  Obviously the scar couldn't stretch, so the skin did along each side of it.

With my first pregnancy I didn't get any.  With the second, only the ones I've mentioned, under my underwear line.  That was in spite of gaining 35kg - I was a teletubbie.  But my stomach, whilst not nearly as flat as before, is stretch mark free.  I was just lucky.  Didn't use any creams or special potions.  A bit of cocobutter, but more for itching.

And as others have mentioned, they fade a lot, mine are barely noticeable now.

I got them very early, about 12/14 weeks before even I was really showing, right along the back of my thighs and they've mostly faded. It took a while though.

Can't really do anything about them though.

Another vote for genetics. Neither myself, mum or sister got stretch marks. I was overdue with both my pregnancies. I used Shea butter both times, but that was more to ease my itchy, dry skin.

Its all genetics. I didn't get any nor did I use anything on my stomach.

I had none until right before the end when I managed to get like, 3.  But then I only really noticed them afterward so they could be due to the c-section I had to have like a PP.

I rubbed some cocoa butter moisuriser on when I remembered, that was about as far as I went prevention-wise.  I just kept it on my bedside table and put it on when I went to bed.

I think a lot of it too may depend on how you carry/how big your stomach gets.

Wow, thanks for all the responses guys! I guess I better pray I have the right genes! Interesting to read everyone's different experiences though.
