Hi, add me too!

We're going to Canada and New York for a month over Christmas. DH's family is in Canada (conveniently spread out) and they have agreed to host us!! We are very lucky.

So, tell me, what is the best way to get from the airport in NY to the hotel with a 5 and a 7yo in tow? I'm thinking hiring a car might be too much to worry about, but not sure about child restraints in taxis.

We stayed in Fairmont Ghiradelli in SF and it was great. It  was an apartment, we were upgraded to a 2 bedroom one, it was nice to spread out for 8 nights. It is also right on the bus line and you can walk to many places, the tram line into town is a block away.

Just check their website for deals, we did a stay 4, pay three deal which worked out as cheap as a hotel.

You also get breakfast each day, a small, but yummy buffet.

In LA next time we will stay in Santa Monica but we stayed in Anaheim as we visited Disneyland and then in Beverly Hills. It was fun and fairly central to what we wanted to do.

I love planning, hopefully will be joining the ranks again soon. We are looking at either over Christmas or in March.

Is the peak season for Christmas only that week? Or is it all over December as well? I have been trying to research this and I am still stumped! I know January is low season, which could be promising...

Hi Mards  original.gif  We are staying in Anaheim (Hojo) for a week doing Disneyland etc (kids are 10 and 8) and four days in Santa Monica (Ocean View) before we fly out of LAX home.

FluffyOscar - the girls in here put me onto Dial 7 a car service from JFK to our hotel in Manhattan.  I've already booked and they were great.  I thought about a shuttle but we arrive at 10pm after 20 something hours of flying from Sydney and I don't want to loop around picking up extra passengers and seeing everyone else's hotel before our own!  I think the kids will be too exhausted (and me to be honest) so I'm looking forward to just calling the number and have our own car and driver pick us up and take us straight there.  It wasn't that expensive either.

I know in California the car service we mentioned there said car restraints are needed for kids 8 years and under.  DD is pretty tall so the owner said he will bring one just in case.  For Dial 7 I mentioned this and they replied that child restraints aren't needed in hire cars in NY so you would need to discuss this with them when booking (or bring your own) - I know safety for me is a number 1 priority and just because that is the way they do it in NY doesn't mean I want that for own my children.

Mellie Kate - that's such a good idea!  Are you getting a NYC pass or hop on, hop off pass??  I have to buy the NYC pass today with the price increase happening next week.  I'll have to study a map a bit more I think.

Carls - goodluck with your decision - you've been so helpful to me in this forum - thank you.  original.gif

snuggly: What do you want ... the list could be endless (if I change the name at the top of MY list from Kee to Snugglybug!)

There's so much good stuff over there, even the littlest things (like deodorant, must get onto sending you that info Jo!) plus there's the Hawaiian treats on top of what you could already buy on the mainland, such as Caramacs - YUM!

I guess I'd be heading down the path of bags, clothes, jewllery, chocolates ... gosh I want to go shopping NOW! I miss the place so bad! Everyone going there needs to send me a postcard so I can feel a little Aloha! wink.gif

I hope your Mum has an amazing time, it's sure come up quick!

P.S The list is updated too. Got sidetracked with all the Hawaii shopping talk! biggrin.gif

FluffyOscar - child restraints are not used in Taxi's in NYC and it is actually legal to have a child under 7 sitting on your knee in a taxi.  We actually had to do this once in a taxi n NYC (don't flame me!!). We had walked 59 blocks to Times square with our kids aged 5,5 & 7 and were going to take the subway back, however this was the day after Hurricane Sandy hit and the subway was not working on the line we needed. There was no way our kids could walk home. We jumped in a taxi (finally getting one as we had small children and a lovely off duty taxi driver picked us up) and one of my 5yr olds sat on my knee. Mind you it took 25 minutes to go 2 blocks so we weren't going at speed thats for sure.

Kee do you have a post on your blog about shopping in Hawaii? I swear I saw one but can't find it now!
Are there any luaus on Oahu anyone can recommend? I've heard it's probably not worth doing...
I'm sure ill have more questions before we leave!

We went to the one inside the Hilton Hawaiian Village as that is where we stayed... but im sure others can attend as well. Included dinner and drinks and the show. It may not be considered the best one but we enjoyed it biggrin.gif

DH has finally agreed with me that it would be good to include a Disney cruise on our next trip.

Who have people booked through?? I have used DCL website for the info but wondered if there was somewhere better/cheaper to book through.

Add me please! I'm booked for August 5-30, arriving at JFK and taking the train to Washington for 6-12, then staying in Brooklyn 12-19 and then I have a studio apartment I've booked via airbnb for 19th-30th. So excited!

I have booked most of our accommodation.

And upon rechecking just got $410 refunded as the prices for one of our rooms had dropped. They have gone back up again now.

Just to monitor for our car hire as it is still quite high.
October seems soo far away.

I do have my cruise in 5 weeks time so that will be good. Need to organise our day trips for that and our drink packages.

Kee - What are the drink package prices like on the US ships?

Flames aren't allowed in the travel forum!  I would have done the same thing.  So you were there for the hurricane??  What was that experience like?

So excited for all of the above booking their trips.   biggrin.gif

I made one mistake yesterday booking my NYC City Pass.  They're only valid for 6 mths which means I would have to exchange them 2 days before we arrive.   I thought they were valid for 12mths but must be mixing it up with Disneyland tickets.   ddoh.gif   I arranged them yesterday as the prices are going up from tomorrow I think.  Anyway I emailed them straight away and they've sent me an extension form to fill out so hopefully all should be okay.  They were very helpful though.

On their website Mellie Kate - from 1 March 2013.  Big enough jump to make me buy now.  It's in small writing underneath the main picture on the home screen.  Click on the + sign to see price increase.

We booked our cruise through Dreams Unlimited it was the same price as booking through DCL but we received on board credit, $150 I think. We do ours in October but so far so good, all emails are replied to over night and our agent seems to know what she is talking about. We have to July to pay it off, after a deposit is paid. Sometimes deals pop up on vacations to go but never really for the newest ship Fantasy, and it's last minute bookings.

Our NYC hotel won't price match our rate of $250 a night for our date change request and is now $375 so we have decided to do WDC 1st then up to NYC. It means we only have 4 full days in DC and 6 full days in NYC but we just couldn't justify the price difference.

So I've spent the last couple of days trying to work out what to do each day and was wondering what do you do (or what would you do) 1st in NYC? When we were planning on going to NYC 1st we were just thinking a really light day wondering around Time Square, Toys r us etc as we would be jet lagged but now with doing NYC 2nd I'm not sure if we should do something more.

List is updated, welcome to our new additions!  waves.gif

Carnival Kid: Not that I've booked one but Vacations To Go do cheaper prices on Disney Cruises so they may be worth having a look at.

Becca: I've previously only done the unlimited soft drink package (when I used to drink soft drink) on US cruises and then simply bought the cocktail of the day when I wanted a drink as they are usually only about $5 each anyway and I'm not a huge drinker. The soda package is about $6 per day. On my cruise in October with Celebrity, I've purchased the drinks package that includes fresh juices, smoothies, soft drink, cocktails and spirits and it's $900. That's about $47 per day for 2 adults but I believe we got it as a 2 for 1 deal for the inaugural sailing of the ship in Australia and some sweet talking from our cruise consultant has resulted in us being able to take that discount with us to our new booking for the October sailing. Otherwise I think it's around $900 per person for the 19 days - that is all you can drink for everything though so even though I'm not usually a big drinker, I'm planning on making that cruise the exception! wink.gif On our last cruise together in Hawaii, my Dad didn't buy an alcohol package and at the end of the cruise had about $1000 to pay for drinks and that was only a 7 days cruise. If you like wine with dinner, an evening beer, the pub crawls, champagne breakfasts etc then it's definitely better to see what packages your cruise does and buy it. At least you know for certain what the final amount will be when you complete your cruise. Who are you cruising with soon? Hope you have a great time! original.gif
