What you wish you knew when you started

For anyone that has learnt a lot along the way, can you please tell me what you wished you knew from the start.  

I am now approaching 12 months and have had one appointment with RE.  I was given clomid to make me ovulate earlier.  On 25mg it made me ovulate late and bleed/spot all follicular stage of cycle.  On 50mg I have bled/spot much worse all cycle.  I have ovulated 1 day early at best,  I ovulate on CD 19-24.  

The RE said clomid for 3 months, then a laproscopy, then IVF.  Its all so medical and i dont know whats wrong.  I have had ultrasound (polycycstic signs but ovulating so not the syndrome), hormones (slightly out of normal range), had deficient Vit D (now on 1000mg pd) and hubby SA "normal" but morphology 6% (is that normal?).  

Are there any other tests etc before going down the medical route?

I'm sorry to hear that you don't know what is wrong. Sounds very medical, it's all confusing to me too.

I have read that a Vitamin D deficiency can cause fertility problems, I would take the supplements for 3 months min to have an effect. I'm not sure about other tests sorry. My DP results say morphology should be >4.

What do I wish I knew when I started TTC? I wish that my partner and I knew that he has a low sperm count and low morphology. Feel like we've wasted a year and a half of TTC.  He went for another SA on friday, hopefully that comes out better. Fingers crossed.

Sometimes you get "unexplained infertility" which is what I had. No cause found so I needed IVF which took a few goes to work in the end.

I have PCOS and was on Clomid as well, could ovulate but couldn't get pregnant. Husband's SA was perfect.
Did IUI's before the IVF.

Oh, there are a few things I'd wish I'd known....
I found out that it's a good idea to stay on Metformin(are you on that? Are you insulin resistant like I was?) for the first trimester of pregnancy.
I wish I'd known how beneficial acupuncture could be when TTC(I heard about it on here after I was already pregnant).

You ask about tests before going down the medical route, but the tests are PART of the medical route. You sort of need to do the tests to find out the problem. I didn't ever have the test to see if my tubes were blocked though. That's a possibility for you as well.

That sometimes they won't find a reason.

That being said, DH has an issue with his sperm morphology and I have slight premature ovarian aging, so we know what's wrong, we just don't know what's caused it (although we have our suspicions)

I do know several couples who have had massive trouble conceiving, multiple miscarriages or just not getting pregnant at all. They ended up needing IVF to have a baby, but the reasons for the trouble conceiving were never discovered at all. Maybe in a generation or so they will know the reasons, but reproductive science is still very much a developing area.
