mould on a cane basket?

I was using a cane basket in my bathroom as a bit of a laundry hamper for a while. I've just had a good look at it and the bottom appears to have some mould on the cane (black spots) - I assume from a damp towel or similar being in the basket. What's the best way to get rid of it? I want to be sure to kill it properly as the basket was now going to go in DS room for his stuffed animals....
Any help appreciated TIA

Can you scrub it with soap / dishwashing detergent to get most of the surface mould off? Then I'd mix tea tree oil with water and spray it on, getting into all the crevices, and leave in the sun. Clove oil is also very good for killing mould, but is expensive (find in health food stores) and doesn't smell as nice as tea tree (find in medicinal aisle in supermarket).
