So we are acquiring a 2009 Ford Captiva privately next month, & afterwards we wish to sell our 1998 Honda CRV. We've never had to do it before. Does anyone have an opinion about where/how is the best way to do this?

Trading Post
Gumtree
eBay
Else?

I have sold 3 cars on the Trading Post and all sold within 5 days....cars sold were older models, like yours, and I got the price I wanted. Warning though, you will get stupid phone calls asking for you to drive it to some remote location and others offering stupid amounts like $500. I also got heaps of people asking me to "hold the car" so they could come and get it on the weekend.....without a deposit or any money? I think not

We sold recently thru carsales.com.au

Sold within 2 days so we were happy with that. Make sure all your paperwork is in order ready for when you advertise.

Most buyers will try to beat you down by as much as $500, so be prepared.

My brother sold his car by parking it on the side of a road with a sign in the window. I have noticed quite a few cars for sale parked around our local area.

A Ford Captiva? I thought they were Holden?

I sold my car on a local FB selling page. I had people call me about it from seeing signs on it and also Gumtree but it was FB that sold it in the end.

How do you find the local FB selling page that a few mentioned?

I usually trade mine in (got $17k for my 2007 captiva so not too bad), others I know use Carsales or Trading post.

I wouldn't sell my socks on Gumtree, too many nutters..

The easiest is to trade in. You wont get as much for it but it saves you the hassel of putting ads up, getting people to turn up when they promise to test drive it and the risk of bounched cheques, people doing runners with your car etc.

If you don't want to trade it in I find carsales the best.

Can you still trade in when you are not buying a car from that dealer?

We recently sold ours.
We listed on Gumtree and Carsales.
It took a while but we sold for what we wanted for it.

Trade ins are easiest but do your homework first. We got offered 5K to trade in a car we sold privately for 11.5K.

Nothing to be lost from a sign in the window either.

Yes you can but you may loose $1,000 or more on what you would get selling it privately.

Carsales.com.au cost me $80 (from memory) + I did about 9 hours of work in total (researching the price, taking photos, writing the ad, taking phone calls meeting with the buyer   - and I sold it for $1,000 more than what I was offered in a caryard. Therefore I was effectively working for around $100 an hour! Which is a lot more than what I earn....

I tried a number of free classifieds services, stuck signs on the car and drove around a lot but got no interest in almost 2 months. Stuck it on carsales.com.au and it was gone a week later. Might cost a few $$$ but I found it well worth it.
