BabyG weaned himself at sixteen months and a month on, my hair is falling out in clumps. My hair dresser assured me it is normal but I just wanted to know what other mothers have experienced? I can find plenty on line about hair loss after giving birth but not so much after weaning an older baby/toddler.

I didn't know this happened, but then I had such a plethora of hair back then, I probably didn't notice until I swept the floors. Your hair will grow back, until you are over 50 and then if you have female pattern baldness in the family - that is a real worry.

I only breastfed for about 12 months each time but I certainly lost huge amounts of hair when I stopped.  Lots of different hairdressers over the years have said that it is normal (although I was certainly at the upper end of normal!!)

Yes, this happened to me when DD1 self weaned at 11 months. I had a serious case of the blues for a few days too!

Am currently awaiting the post-birth hair loss thanks to DD2...

Yes it happened to me about 2 months post birth both times (I stopped feeding around the 6 week mark) so really I think it was the stopping feeding that caused it.

Its normal, its just a bit unnerving to see. Don't worry, you wont go bald. I was badly in need of a decent haircut anyway and my hair seemed a lot healthier and it was less noticeable after that too.

I lost a heap of hair at around four months, yet kept feeding until she was 2.25. The second one will be three in a month and still has a night feed. I don't recall a time when I lost lots of hair since her birth. I'm definitely greyer, though.
