My daughter constantly gets mouth ulcers. We are cleaning her teeth twice a day and she eats very healthily, lots of fruits and vegetables with Vitamin C she has a multivitamin every night. What on earth could be causing them?!?

Is she very rundown? I've heard vitamin B helps.

I get then when I'm rundown, always have. They suck, I'm sorry for your daughter. SM33 is good for them. Sorry I can't be more helpful, but I sympathise!

When I get them, I rub vegemite on them.  Hurts for a second but they usually clear up quickly.

I then eat vegemite on toast or biccies for a while which seems to keep them away.

Recurrent mouth ulcers can be a sign of coeliac disease, there are many different presentations of cd aside from the more typical gi symptoms. Just something to think about..

I don't think she is particularly run down. It doesn't matter what time we put her to bed she will muck around in her room until she actually gets tired and goes to sleep. She has a bed time routine and wind down time but if she is not tired she will not sleep. She has always always been a shocking sleeper

I might look into that. I will google foods with zinc now!

Toothpaste may cause ulcers due to the frothing agent - SLS (or Sodium Lauryl Sulphate).
I have been told by a biochemist that it alters the normal flora & ph of the mouth & some people are particularly sensitive to it.
Not sure how old your DD is, but Kenalog (over the counter paste) from your chemist is really great for helping ulcers.
Good luck with getting some answers, I really feel for her, they hurt so much.
Maybe try another toothpaste from your health food shop that doesn't contain any SLS.

Oh god, don't tell me that! I am now off to google that and see if she has any of the other symptoms

I will also try the vegemite blossom 11 and I will also look at maybe changing her toothpaste

I feel for her because I get mouth ulcers on occasion too

The only other thing we can think of is that she has a terrible habit of chewing on her toothbrush and I think the bristles might be rubbing on her gums. She also has a habit of doing 'duck lips' when I am trying  to do her bottom teeth and I sometimes get her gums when I am doing that area

If she is getting a lot of mouth unclers, like 5+ at a time, definitely get it checked out.  It can also be a sign of kidney damage.

Just thought I'd mention it in case nothing else helps, sorry to make you worry!

Kenalog (from the chemist) is fantastic for mouth ulcers - apply before bed and they'll be heaps better the next day (doesn't hurt to put on). Only takes a couple of days to completely clear them up.

I find that we tend to get them when we're run down or have been unwell or not eating properly.

I very highly recommend that you change her toothbrush more regularly.

I used to get more than my fair share of mouth ulcers and this is the one thing that has stopped them.

We have a family history of it and she does get bloody irritable a lot of the time. I think it might be a good idea to take her to the doctor and get it ruled out. I know that CD is not a death sentence and we can adjust her diet etc etc but I have so much on my plate I think it will tip me over the edge if I have to change our diet LOL

Her toothbrush gets changed very regularly, about every 6 weeks or so because she chews on the bloody things!

I have always had terrible mouth ulcers too - I hate them!

Same virus strain as cold sores (herpes simplex) so once you have them you have them for life!

Nothing specific causes them for me, but sometimes hard foods or biting the inside of my mouth will give me one but more often than not it's when I'm stressed, run down or getting sick.

Sometimes it's also if I've not been eating or taking car of myself especially well.

Bonjela works a treat to numb the pain (especially before eating) as does panadol. Gargling with warm salty water or bicarbonate soda in warm water is also excellent for killing the bacteria and reliving pain.

Don't over brush or gargle with mouthwash as you kill the good bacteria trying to rid the mouth of the ulcer at the same time.

I feel for your daughter....so painful & makes me super miserable when I have them sad.gif

I get them too. I had no idea about the coldsores virus causing them though, interesting. My dad gets them too.

I get them from walnuts, sulphites, dried fruit, dark chocolate and fruit juices. Not every time but they're the usual culprits.

vegemite would be helping because of the vitamin B, but best to avoid f you think it my be a gluten issue.

As a PP said I would get coeliacs tested too. I have always had way more ulcers than the average and I found out a couple of years ago I have coeliacs.
There are so many things it could be though so don't worry too much.
Does she grind her teeth in her sleep at all? It could be that?
