I've never taken out travel insurance before and my head is in a spin!

In May we are flying from Melbourne to Sydney and staying there 3 nights before heading off on a 15 day South Pacific Cruise. Upon return we are same day flying back from Sydney to Melbourne.

To get both domestic and international coverage so everything is covered I would need to take out an annual/multi-trip policy cover? Is that right?

only take out a multi trip if you are planning to travel more during the year.

Basically what you do if you just want the one trip is start the insurance from the day you leave your house until the day you intend to return to your house, and the policy will cover you for the whole trip.

You just need to select the appropriate "zone" that you are travelling in.

Good luck, travel insurance did my head in at first, but now it's not so bad original.gif

Just FYI, if you want your travel insurance to cover your flights you need to pay for it before or at the same time as you book your flights.

If you buy your insurance after you've booked your flights, you won't be covered.

And PP was right - you just need insurance for one trip, just make sure you specify what area you'll be spending the most time in.

If you are paying by American Express, check your card because I know we get free travel insurance as long as we have paid for the flights using our cards.

ASD - Not sure who you insure with but that is not true of many insurance companies ( none that I have come by).

You are covered for any issues that arise from the time you purchase until you return.

So you book your flights (definite departure and return dates to plug into cover dates - this is needed as the coverage price on a one off trip is dependant on departure and return dates), then take out your insurance any time before your departure.

The sooner you take the cover out the better (after purchasing flights), as this covers you if you get sick hospitalised and need to rebook anything, or flights are cancelled etc.

I second checking insurance available with your credit card. It was not suitable for our two month jaunt, so we took out additional insurance.

Thanks everyone. Credit Card is out as didn't use one. I was just so worried about making a wrong decision as the single trip zones weren't Australia/domesic due to the cruise and wanting to make sure I wasn't just covered when I left Australia as some policies are worded different so will confirm with who I decide on I guess original.gif
