Fruit, Vege.Deli Meats, Fresh Fish, Meat and Poultry?


I am trying to keep my shopping costs down a bit, but still buying similar to what we eat now IYKWIM.

I do buy a lot of frozen vegies, but still have to buy some things fresh

I buy what I need. I dont really look at the per kilo price.

Depends on the product. I mean I pay more for steak than I do for beef mince.

I couldn't begin to recall and list them all.

I just buy what I need. I only buy fresh fruit and vegies to get me through a few days so it is still fresh.

I don't tend to notice prices that much. If you buy in season produce then the prices should be reasonable.

I don't plan meals ahead. Instead I just buy whatever fruit, vegetables and meat that are on special or cheapest. I pretty much never buy fresh fish as that is far too expensive for me.

For meat I never spend above $10 a kg, and pretty much always spend $8 a kg or less. This means I pretty much only buy mince, LOL.

Fruit and vegetables I pretty much have a limit of $4 a kg, and try to stick to under $3 a kg (unless it is something very light weight like mushrooms or spinach).

I then plan my meals around what I have bought. Although TBH I don't do much planning, it pretty much means I open the fridge in the afternoon, and go yeah, I guess I'll cook that tonight. Then at the end of the week, whatever is left gets combined for the last, most interesting meal of the week, whatever the heck it turns out to be.

I would never plan meals in advance. For example, I might plan to make stuffed zucchini and then I get to the shop and zucchinis are $8 a kg or something ridiculous. So I really just buy whatever is cheapest.

I do grow a lot of basics though, so that helps.

I meal plan because otherwise it blows the shopping way out., So I do find it easier to meal plan for that reason, but am still trying to get the cost down.  I buy both fish fillets because the kids wont eat fresh, but I prefer the fresh.

The only time I buy sausages is for Devilled Sausages or Curried sausages, toherwise we dont eat them, the kids dont like them and I hate the things (due to being practially force fed them, as a kid)

We have a fresh seasonal fruit and veg box delivered once a week, and that generally lasts us the whole week. That is $35. Occasionally we might need to pick up something for a specific menu, if it isn't in the box, but generally we work with the box. We don't use frozen veggies, ever.

We don't eat meat every night, maybe 3 or 4 nights a week. And usually it is chicken thighs...

We don't stick price limits on food generally, but we are pretty good at consuming everything we buy and making things last. I think in general, meat is the biggest expense when it comes to food. Because we don't eat it every night, it keeps costs down. We also eat a lot of rice.

Our biggest issue $ wise, is that we are a gluten free household and that can be expensive...

I try to buy seasonally so that keeps costs down. I go to an independent grocers who text the weekly specials on a Friday night and then I meal plan based on that eg Zucchinis were something like 89c/kg recently. That week we ate a lot of zucchini based meals LOL I pretty much refuse to buy meat at the supermarket and bulk buy at the wholesale butcher near us

I also meal plan otherwise I waste quite a bit as I am not a person who can just chuck a meal together

$3-$4 a kilo for general fruit and veg.
I don't buy pork cos we raise our own pigs.
I buy the macro free range chickens and occasional the steggles 2.2 kilo chooks(frozen) when they are on sale for about $8.
We generally buy half a beast at a time which works out under $6 a kilo
I only ever buy a leg of lamb (the rest is too expensive) at approx $8 a kilo.
I buy frozen peas/ frozen corn and frozen butter beans.

I just paid $31/kg for some smoked salmon.  Love it as a treat once a week or so for lunch.

I go to Costco which is a 40 min trip one way and what I do is bulk buy so that I don't have to do that trip more than every 3ish months. Of course, the storing of the stuff is an issue! But, I just deal with it.

As for only having a small freezer, I would buy mince (as an example) only on special but buy a lot of it at one time. Bring it home, take it out of those bulky containers and put into freezer bags which can flatten out and you can fit more in. Also, we don't tend to use what the recipe recommends. That rice and mince dish I mentioned earlier calls for 500g of mince I use about 350g and bulk it out with more potatoes, and other veges. No-one notices and no-one complains biggrin.gif

You might find this useful. I was involved in it years ago but they have revamped it and it looks really good.  Quite a few recipes too.

We are on a strict budget this year so I will definitely be using this site myself.

I can relate to this pretty much these are the limits I set for myself - though I do sometimes pay more per kg for meat - but I would aim for a max of $10kg and would refuse to go over $13kg.

I also shop for meat specials - I shop when i know they are likely to have mark downs.

With meat, I'd rather a small amount of good meat than a big amount of not nice meat.  So if I'm having steak, it will be rib fillet, but I'd only serve half a fillet each.  Or lamb - I'd buy cutlets on special but only have 1 or 2 each, rather than a whacking big bbq lamb chop.  Also nice mince and fill out the meal with veggies.  

Fruit and veg - I work it out based on what will actually get eaten and is in season at the time.  No point buying red delicious apples for $3 a kilo that will be left to go off, when I could buy granny smiths for $4 kilo and they'll be eaten.

It depends on the product really. No more than $2.50 for a mango and it has to be decent sized.
Stone fruits no more than $7/kg...because I don't buy as many of them.
Apples no more than $4/kg
Strawberries no more than $2.50/punnet
Grapes - no more than $6/kg (rarely this year)
Banana's - no more than $2/kg
Lettuce- no more than $2 ea

We mainly only have mince - I get the $12/kg mince, DP the $6kg mince (he is skinny so fat content doesn't matter quite so much). Chicken breasts will pay no more than $11/kg

I go to a fruit and vege shop that sources everything locally and very fresh. I pay a bit more than I would at a supermarket, but I don't get the wasteage that I would with supermarket produce.

For example, a supermarket zucchini may only last up to a week in the fridge whereas one from the local vege shop lasts for up to 3 weeks before going a little soft. It means that I get a chance to use absolutely everything I buy.

I buy mince at $5.99 a kg from a local butcher. The meat is surprisingly lean, although I do drain it after cooking before adding seasoning/sauces/veges. I buy my meat in the less expensive bulk packs and then split it into smaller bags to freeze.

I buy meat one week and veges the next. I end up spending a small amount on each if you take into consideration that what I buy will last more than a fortnight. Meat always works out around $3 a meal (5 of us) unless we are having steak then I splash out and it can cost up to $12 for a meal.

eta ... if pays to read up on and have a knowledge of what is in season at the time. It is no good getting a couple of kgs of apples at a bargain price only to come home and find that they are rotten in the middle or so floury that they are inedible.

Meat I will only buy lean so it is often expensive. Steak is often nearly $30 a kilogram. Mince I buy for $10/kg at our butchers. Chicken Breasts I will not pay more than $10 kg.
Fruit and vegetable I buy according to availability which will often make it more expensive but generally if it says more than $10 a kilo I will go without as. Pink Ladies (our favourite apples) I will pay whatever they ask because we don't like the alternatives. I will not buy grapes for more than $8/kg or strawberries for more than $5 a punnet.

How small is your freezer?

You could probably get away with buying a bulk pack and dividing it into meal sizes in zip lock bags before freezing. That is what we did with a tiny freezer, though we never bought frozen veg as it takes up too much room.

Meat- chicken breast no more then $8 a kilo I stock up when it's $6 a kilo, and never buy thigh as where I shop its dearer then breast. Mince is around the same cost. I tend to go well with shopping when there's a good choice of reduced meat. Salmon fillets I get at $20 a kilo but only I eat it, other fish it depends on the type, frozen crumbed fillets might work out cheaper from the deli section tor you Op. Some shopping trips I get a bulk pack for $80 from the butchers which lasts a fortnight. I also cut down on how much meat a meal, there's five of us so half a kilo is the max per meal, mince is generally 350-400g but gets filled with mushrooms and other veg.

Fruit and veg- I buy from the local fruit n veg shop who stock locally grown produce so most of it is a good price and in season. Best bit is it lasts longer then the supermarkets fruit n veg, it will easily last a fortnight, so although it might cost in total $5 per shop we have no wastage.

Rather than a $/kg price for meat, I tend to allow up to $10 for a meal for us - therefore I will pay more than $10 for, say, a roast because I can get a second meal out of it.

Fruit I buy seasonally, so won't ever pay over $7 for anything (and even then it has to be exceptional) - we have a local markets once a week that we occasionally get to, otherwise tend to buy fresh every other day from the local IGA (because he supports local growers).

have a look at what is around you too, prices vary considerably.  our local butcher has cutlets for about $34/kg, but a small out of the way providore has them at $19/kg.  it means going to a different shop on a different day to my regular shop, but the savings are worth it.

I shop at Costco. Meat is about similar prices, but much better quility. Porterhouse (aka New York cut) is around $20 per kg and boneless rib eye $23kg. However you need to buy those in a slab of around 5kg and cut it yourself.

Fruit and Veg, I buy the odd thing at Costco like strawberries ($11kg) because the quality is awesome, but mostly I buy from the local f+v shop because Costco is 160minutes return away. I only buy fruit and veg that is in season, so no tomatoes in winter. It's much cheaper that way.

I run a deep freeze in the garage. The electricity expense is worth it in the food and time savings I enjoy. Less time shopping, less petrol getting there and I often cook double batches of meals for busy nights and baked goods for lunch boxes. I also refuse to throw out leftovers and will freeze them rather than putting them in the fridge where they often spoil. You can often find things like a zip lock bag of mashed potato in my freezer that will serve two kids, or be handy to make something like tuna patties. I also buy butter and grated parmesan that I buy from Costo in the freezer.
