My two are about to start grade 1 too. I did reading with their class last year in Prep, and most children were reading very basic books without help eg "This is Jim. He likes dogs" In terms of the PM benchmark, they were probably ranging from about 4-8. There were others in the class doing level 1 or 2 though eg "This is a cat. This is a hat". There were 3 more capable readers - and they were reading basic chapter books without help.

My 5 turning 6yo could read independently half way through first year of school, so could her 4yo sibling who was determined to be able to do everything the older one could.

Dd was just turned 5 and was obsessed with books from an early age. Ds was about 8 and although could read when asked had no motivation so to speak. Both are on the g&t program mainly for their English as neither of them particularly excel in maths.
So from my experience age really doesn't matter what I would value more is the motivation and desire to read whatever age that may occur.
Do you have specific concerns that your dd isn't reading at an age appropriate level?
