last night I had BFF, her dh and their kids over or dinner.  BFF told me that she had been going through the kids clothes and had found a pair of shorts too small for her dd, they were only $5 Kmart ones, but would I like to have them for dd2 to grow into.  I said thanks and put them down so I could get dinner ready.

had a great night and then as they were leaving BFF asked if I had the $5 for the shorts.  knowing I had no money on me, I scrounged around and came up with $3.  BFF picked up the shorts and told me not to worry, she is catching up with J & N tomorrow, she will see if either of them are interested in them!

dh and I burst out laughing once they left, seriously, who would do that over a $5 pair of shorts!

I seriously wonder about the company some of you EB'ers keep. You call these people friends?

OMG if the $5 is really that important to her maybe she should return them to kmart (if it still has the price tag on them) and get all her money back.

That is just stingy.

roll2.gif WOW!!!

That reminds me of a few weeks ago.  DH picked up something for our neighbour that cost $895.  DH had to go and pick it up for him so it took time and fuel to get.  When the neighbour came to pick it up he handed DH $900 cash and then stood there looking stupid.  DH asked if he was ok and he said "well are you going to get me my $5 change?".  He was dead serious! ffear.gif

Some people gift on others charge...  Neither bothers me.

After a few mix ups I always ask now if people expect payment.  I also make it clear when I gift on stuff that I do not expect it back as I keep the stuff I want for sentimental reasons...

You should have told her you'd take the shorts as payment for dinner!

Do people really act like this?

And that is your BEST FRIEND FOREVER????

#15 Mamacass2

She probably should have said I have a pair of shorts that my DD will not wear but are new would you like to buy them for your DD instead of saying would you like them because that implies it is a gift/hand me down. Not weird as such just poorly communicated. But I would have laughed too OP. I mean hadn't you just had them for dinner? The cost of having them over for dinner would have been more than $5!!

One of dh's friends offered him 20 cents for a lick of his ice cream once.  Luckily this guy is very generous when push comes to shove.

I just feel embarrassed for people sometimes.  I couldn't stand being like that, how awful.

That is very strange!

I'm inclined to think that maybe she was desperate for money being Xmas? Or is she always that stingy?

Did you charge her for the dinner her and her kids had just eaten?

#21 madmother

Posted 15 December 2012 - 12:46 PM

Wow!

You need to look at the standard of friends you have.

I am embarrassed because last night I was given some chocolates and a bottle of wine, and then today a lovely new friend (well, new this year) told me she is getting me something to say thanks for all I have done for her son.

The thing is I do this because these kids are my kids' mates. I love having them here, love the great friends they are , love the server nights (we had 14 here last night, then 5 extras stayed over), it is not about keeping score.

But it is lovely to know it is appreciated too.

Seriously - send 'em a bill for dinner!

I can believe it.  My husband's sister and his BIL are like this.  So tight with money that any opportunity to make a buck and they are right there!  We were at their house for dinner once and we had brought chocolates and drinks with us.  My two daughters (3 and 5 at the time) sat after dinner watching whilst their two sons had icecream.  It was not offered to my two.  My MIL could never understand how her daughter could be like it.

Our relationship fizzled out once MIL died as she was the reason we used to keep in contact.
