I'm responding very positively to Gilbert.  The more I think about it the more I like it.

I also like the sound of Gil as an inevitable nickname.

I have inexplicable and baseless general positivity on G names for boys. I like Gabriel/Gavriel, Gideon, Gregory, Gavin, Gareth...

...but I don't like Gilbert.  ph34r.gif

I immediately thought of Leo saying it in What's Eating Gilbert Grape. I don't hate it, but I wouldn't use it.

I wouldn't say cool but it's a good name.  I actually find its NN Gil quite cool.

A friend of mine has a Gilbert and he is gorgeous so I like the name. Had I heard it before I met a Gilbert, then no, I would not have liked it.

If you love the name then use it. Everyone will always have an opinion but it should not really matter.

I don't love Gilbert but I think it fits in with the names that are making appearances again-Arthur, Albert, Frederick. And Gilbert Blythe is a nice character.
