Gym membership - how do they price it?

I want to join the gym starting in the new year, but I'm not sure when is the best time to join.

Am I better off signing up now but post dating the membership to start next year so that I get the price that they're selling them for now (which is not a special), or am I better off waiting until the new year to sign up?

Are they likely to put the price up because 'everyone' will be siging up in the new year, or are they more likely to have specials trying to win their market share of everyone signing up?

What's the 'normal' thing they do?  I've never taken notice of what their cycles are...

I find it all varies to be honest.

At my gym they have specials randomly throughout the year
(two week free trail,  30 day all access for only $10,  etc).  Their normal membership prices stays the same when there isn't a special on.

The womens gym I am at usually has a free registration deal at the start of the year, and random discounts at other times.

Is there any reason you can't start now?

My gym has specials all the time. At the moment they have a no joining fee which they will have again in the new year I am sure of it.

I think most gyms would have 'specials' in Jan to try get people to join as that is when we all try to make new years resolutions etc.

I'm waiting for my medication to settle in and to have a couple of appointments with the psychologist to get work issues under control first so that I'm in the right frame of mind to actually go.  We also have family coming to stay over Christmas from interstate so I know I won't be going during the time that they're here, so I'd rather just wait and start when the timing is right and I'm going to go, rather than 'hate' going and possibly set me up to not want to go in the future.  Fair point though!  wink.gif

That's what I wasn't sure about - whether they would do that or slug you more because they know that people are going to join then....  I would ask them, but I reckon they'd be inclined to just want to sign me up now  unsure.gif

Good enough reason, though depending on the family you may want to be at the gym to get away from them. ph34r.gif   laugh.gif

I know all of the gyms I have ever been a member of have let you put memberships on hold and charge a few dollars a week instead of full fee, not sure if you would be able to do it from the start, but it could be worth asking them.

Good luck with it all. original.gif

If there are no specials now  - wait - my old gym had the best specials around Xmas and the new year. I loved their buy 3 months / get 3 months free or same for 6 months. Loved it. It had an end date... no harrassing or not being able to stop a membership.

They had them every year.
Definately wait!!!

Our gym is the same price all year round. I pay $14 a week for gym and pool and no joining fee.

laugh.gif  They're actually good, otherwise yeah I see your point!

They actually do this for free I think - not sure if there's a minimum time, but I asked if I went away if I could put it on hold for a couple of weeks and they said yes, so I'll confirm this when I sign up.

And thanks  biggrin.gif

Wow!  That would be good!  I can't see them being that generous, but I'll hold off just in case...

That is cheap!  This one will be $19 a week, but it's better than the other ones that I rang in town that were $13 and $16.  I'm more inclined to use this one over the cheap one, plus it includes childcare and isn't attached to the local pool so easier to get a locker and the pool is actually clean.  But I would much rather pay your $14!
