As the title says - Which songs will get your kids up and dancing?

I dont mean music like The Wheels on the Bus and Wiggles songs etc. I'm after child friendly top 40. I'm a Triple J listener so a bit out of the loop with pop music at the moment...

ETA - For a group of 4-8 year olds.

My kids like mainly One Direction, Justin Bieber...

And anything else that is in the top 40.

They also like MmmBop from Hanson, and some backstreet boys stuff.

My 11 month old Loves loves loves that Gangham Style song unfortunately. She's also fond of moves like Jagger but aside from those two she's heard from the older kids i don't listen to much recent music, anything boppy will get her going tho original.gif

Edited to add, sorry didnt see your ages

My kids' (5 & 7) current favorites are "Smooth Criminal" (the Alien Ant Farm version), "Uprising" (Muse), "Moves Like Jagger" (Maroon 5), "500 Miles" (The Proclaimers), and "Gangnam Style" (PSY). cool.gif  We have music in heavy rotation in the car, and these 5 songs are clearly the most requested.

However, I've just finished burning 20 CDs for my daughter's Year One classmates -- as her little year end holiday treat for them (in lieu of lollies). Since some of the parents have strong feelings against young kids listening to anything with overt sexual references (e.g. "Moves Like Jagger"), I've kept the tunes very G-rated. Retro stuff is very good for this purpose!

A few of the tunes on her summer mix:

* Surfin' USA (The Beach Boys)

* Disco Inferno (The Glee version)

* Walkin' On Sunshine (Katrina & the Waves)

* Twistin' By The Pool (The Dire Straits)

* Vacation (The Go Gos)

* MmmBop (Hanson -- way cooler than Justin Bieber could ever hope to be!)

* What Time Is It (High School Muscial)

* Hot, Hot, Hot (Buster Poindexter)

* Let's Groove (Earth, Wind & Fire)

You get the drift... wink.gif

DS1 at 5 his favourite song is Bom Bom by Sam and the Womp.

His school even had this at their sports day last week (catholic school) so it is relative PG compared to a lot of other songs.

He likes "Chasing the sun" by The Wanted

others

Boom Boom by Justice Crew
I like to move it move (Madagascar theme)

Gangnam Style ATM - but you can always rely on a little bit of MJ no matter what time of day or night, DSS will always dance to it.

In our house we currently love"It's always a good time" by Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen.

I am a Triple J listener - and my kids (5 and 3) - love that kind of music.

We are listening to the Killers - somebody told me, Metric - Synthetica, San Cisco - Awkward, Birds of Tokyo - This Fire (thats not very boppy though). They are all pretty kid friendly.  If they are lego loving boys, there is an album by the Fold which are all Ninjago Lego themed which are pretty dancey.

She's got me dancing is a good one as well - Tommy Sparks I think.

They are also big fans of the Chipmunks unfortunately as well.

My kids LOVE "Somebody Told Me." They call it the "Robot Boyfriend Song"  because the beginning sounds so funky. "She's Got Me Dancing" is another one we love, along with "I Don't Feel Like Dancing" (Scissor Sisters), which is in a similar vein.

No Chipmunks here, but I just forked out $9 on itunes for the @*&#ing soundtrack to the Zhu Zhu pet movie. They are close cousins! rolleyes.gif

This doesn't make me a better mother by any stretch, but we totally bypassed all of the "Wheels On The Bus" stuff. My husband & I just can't stomach it. I realize that songs of repetition can be good for children and we've depived them of that. But by the same token, I do think there's something to be said for early exposure to Triple J and great retro stuff.

Have fun making your mixes, OP. Give me a holler if you need a CD, as I've made mixes for other EBers.

Thanks for the suggestions so far..

My kids favourite album at the moment is Like a Version Vol 7 with the most danced to song being Owl Eyes version of Pumped up Kicks. Not very lyrically appropriate for a kids party  unsure.gif

'Sexy and me know it', as DS1 says!  Maybe not what you were looking for biggrin.gif  My own Mum is disgusted that he sings this, I tend to just laugh it off, pretty much everyone knows it's a p*sstake.  And no, it wasn't me who got him singing it but I'm not that concerned that I'd actively try to stop him!

Call me maybe, always a good time, wings by ?Little Mix, All the Single Ladies.

I'm the mean mum who won't let kids listen to song lyrics with the word sexy in them.

K-pop is great for kids. They particularly like Hyuna's Bubble Pop and the Ice Cream song. And Gangnam Style of course.

Mika is nice and boppy (Grace Kelly and Love Today)

We also dance madly to Toy Dolls' Nellie The Elephant, Iggy Pop's Louie Louie, Chili Peppers Dani California and quite a lot of MCR.

ABBA went over well at our recent preschool disco.
