I'm heading to Hobart soon and I've never been there before.  I'll be there for a few days and I love my coffee.

Can anyone recommend any places which serve great coffee?

Just off the top of my head....

Westend pump house in Murray St in the city.

Retro Cafe down at Salamanca.

Environs in Battery Point.

If you're looking for somewhere for dinner try Smolt (also at Salamanca).

Have fun!!

It's very hard to get good coffee in Hobart unfortunately. Most is not very good and overpriced.

The cupping room is supposed to be good.

The Cupping Room is now the Westend Pump House - it has great coffee.

It's really not that hard to find a good coffee - as a former Hobartian living in Melbs I can tell you it's not that bad and prices are standard.

Thanks Flutterbug..

I was just wrinkling my nose up at that PP too!

Maybe out in the suburbs (aka 'norchy) you'd be searching around but honestly city/Sth/Nth Hobart.... you might as well be in Melbourne!

Hobart has changed. There's heaps of good coffee and excellent food.

Island Espresso on Elizabeth St.
Shoebox Cafe on Elizabeth St.
Pilgrim on Argyle St
Villino on Criterion St

Good food: Ethos, Garagistes, Cuiccio, Shoebox and for cheap, cheerful and excellent asian food try Written on Tea and Vina Yummy Kitchen, both in Sandy Bay.

Avoid: Jam Packed and Timeless Way, near the Art Hotel on the wharf, both overpriced and terrible. Also, Retro Cafe has terrible coffee IMO, but good location for people watching and has other things to offer on the menu.

As an ex-Melbournite and self-confessed coffee snob, I agree that there are a number of places you can get good coffee (and I would second most of dotdash's picks).

My coffee recommendations would be (based on a reliably good coffee every time):

Tricycle (at Salamanca)
Pigeon Hole (West Hobart)
Jackman & McRoss (Battery Point)

All of these places have snacks worthy of your attention too.

I would also have to add

Yellow Bernard in Collins Street

The Aproneers (Lindisfarne, if you are venturing over the rive).

to the list.

Don't diss 'norchy too quickly, errr, at least re coffee.

There's a cafe behind Glenorchy Plaza called Timeout Cafe, which does a decent coffee.

Yes, it's true. There's good coffee north of the Latte Line. It's not 'the best coffee in Hobart' per OP's request, but it's much easier to find good coffee in Hobart than you'd think, these days.
