Stressed....Whose Stressed...Who Said That!
Hi,

My DD, whose 12, has been getting major bouts of Diarrhea, it happens once or twice a day and nearly every day. Its not Gastro as she is fine, she was tested for Celiac(sp) Disease and she was negative.

I have written out what she has been eating and drinking over the last few days, and we have managed to find out that when she has icecream or milk in her cereal...within 30 minutes she has diarrhea. Then the next time she goes she is fine. It seems to be only when she has the larger amounts of diary, so not when she has milk in her tea etc.

I am going to try her on a Lactose Free diet for a few days and see if this makes a difference while we wait for her GP's appointment next week.

I have a funny feeling this is what has been plaguing her for months.

So how long after having Lactose does it affect your body?
Does it just happen like this...with no warnings?
Can there be other underlying causes?
If she is Lactose Intolerant, is that for life?
Can you get Diary Free Cheese? As DD loves cheese....

Thanks
Lynn

My DD is not lactose intolerant, but she is cows milk protein intolerant.

Her reaction generally takes between 1 and 3 days to occur.

You can get soy cheese and soy cream cheese. But I have tasted it, and it tastes horrible! My DD is young enough not to mind though.

Dairy intolerances are normally grown out of.I read something like 80% grow out by the age they are 4. Being that your DD is older than that though, I don't know about growing out of it. My research has been based on babies. My DD's reactions seem to be getting worse though (we found out when she accidently get her hands on some cheese and had a nibble!).

Good luck.

I am lactose Intolerant and im 24 now. It was much worse when i was younger and now it is different day to day. Some days i can feel my stomach will handle it other days i can tell it wont. I can have an ice cream and and hr later my stomach churns n churns usually ending up with me on the toilet blush.gif

I have had it since birth also.

DD1 is also lactose intolerant. Although she can have cereal and a cup of milk in a day. She loves cheese but if she eats too much it ends in a vomit wacko.gif

An intolerance is usually to the sugar in a food, can start at any age- usually after a bug in the gut that changes the lining of the gut.
You can buy goats cheese or soy cheese but not lactose free cheese. You can also buy lactose free milk, sounds to me as that is what it might be.

you need to remove it totally from her diet for a couple of weeks and then reintroduce slowly, most people with intolerances can cope with a little (ie in tea) but not a lot (ie in milkshake!!)
once reintroduced you might find that she can cope with a small piece of cheese or some icecream every now and then, but not on cereal.

Hope this helps

I'm not intolerent but I am sensitive. I can't drink a glass of milk. My tummy blows up I look around 6 months pregnant & I need to run to the loo with in 30 mins or so.
I can eat a little bit of cheese & yogurt with out having to much reaction... my problem with cheese is that I can rarely have just a little bit blush.gif so I usually feel quite sick & bloated with in around 1 hour of eating it.
I pretty much steer clear of dairy 90% of the time because I know it makes me feel so sick however once in a while I get a craving for a glass of icy cold milk or a nice big hunk of cheese... I usually give in & pay the price as well rolleyes.gif

Oh & my symptoms actually got worse as I got older.
Good luck, hopefully that doctor will have some answers for you! I hope your DD is feeling better soon.

Yeah... right... whatever...
Both my brothers and I are lactose intolerant.
We can handle some dairy, but as ~NinLow~ mentioned, its a day to day thing. You sort of know what your body can handle, but if you stuff it up, then you're headed straight for the loo! blush.gif

I drink soy milk and I don't mind Tofutti (soy cream cheese). I can sometimes handle a light milk in my tea (generally A2 milk, if I run out of soy) but full cream actually makes me vomit.

My DS is sensitive to lactose as well, so I just watch what he eats. He can handle a piece of cheese every now and then, and goes okay with some light A2 milk, but overdo it, and its not a pretty sight sick.gif

*sigh* its such a pity as I love cheesecake, but the mere thought of the reaction afterwards turns me right off!

Cobwebs are the new black!
My DS became lactose intolerant after a bad bout of gastro when he was 4 months old. He should grow out of it eventually because it isn't true lactose intolerance the paed told me (he was tested and came up negative for lactose intolerance so the paed believed the gastro had altered his gut but it should eventually return to normal).

I would say your DD also developed it after a severe form of gastro or something if it is only recent but I would get her tested to be sure.

If she is okay with a small amount of milk then she should be okay with hard cheese.
QUOTE
Cheese

* Cheese may be better tolerated than milk due to a lower lactose content.
* Cheese is also well-tolerated because during the cheese-making process, most of the whey is removed (and the lactose with it). In mature, ripened cheese, lactose disappears entirely within three to four weeks.
* Specific kinds of cheese which you can reasonably expect to tolerate fairly well include cheddar, Colby, Swiss, Parmesan and cottage cheese.

Apparently false negatives are very common in allergy tests.

Oh thank you all so much original.gif

I didn't get why she was OK with smaller amounts like the milk in her tea, but was running to the loo after breakfast. She also did this with a Milkshake and Flavoured Milk.

DD would also feel nauseous with it too, so I'm assuming (I hope rightly) that it can affect you like this too?

She has had so much time off school because we had no idea what the problem was, and I was getting frustrated as she would run to the loo tell me she had Diarrhea yet again in the morning, then be fine and happy all day ohmy.gif I was beginning to think she was having me on. Now if this is it, I understand why it was affecting her just in the morning and not the rest of the day. rolleyes.gif

I have bought her some Sanitarium Soy Milk and their Ice Cream (Lactose Free), she loves Colby and Parmesan Cheese laughing2.gif

Thank you again so much......I have my fingers crossed we have finally hit the nail on the head hands.gif its horrible not knowing whats wrong, and you start to doubt there is anything wrong at all sad.gif

This one's worse than the other one!
I'm at the other end of the spectrum.

I was fine until I had DD 8 years ago.

A while after having her, I couldn't tolerate cows milk, (still can't.) Ice-cream, cheese, yoghurts are fine - thank God!

I just drink Lactose-Free milk, what can you do?
