2. Why did you start your business?
We hoped to make a little splash in the big pond of baby and nursery; to use our creative energies and ideally to make some cash!
3. Has starting your own business lived up to expectations?
It's been an interesting journey for us at VANCHI. Each day brings its challenges and delights. As my husband is known to say at regular intervals "If it was too easy everyone would be doing it". This is a helpful reminder during the valleys of the business adventure. On the positive side it has enable us to unleash our creative energy on the unsuspecting nursery world which has bought us much joy! We love getting positive feedback about our products and hearing about "gaps" in the market or changes that we can make to ensure our products maintain their cutting edge.
4. What have you enjoyed the most about running your own business?Freedom.
5. What is the biggest challenge for you in running your own business?
Our greatest challenge swings between balancing the financial squeeze and maintaining our creative edge for the future of VANCHI.
6. How do you manage the juggle of running your own business with family?
Business and Family are a bit like oil and vinegar - they require constant mixing to stay combined, or they tend to separate and become independent of one another. It is a difficult balance to maintain and run a family business and often when one area is doing really well, the other is suffering. Although the internet and computers have had an extremely positive impact on enabling our type of business to exist, the computer can be our arch enemy. The balance is always difficult for us, as work can filter its way into every facet of our lives. We try to set boundaries and to be disciplined about time away from the computer and creating quality memories with our four boys.
7. Do you have a favourite networking opportunity or event?
I have the privilege of going to see our manufacturers in China several times each year. I always come away having learnt something. I value the generous hospitality offered and enjoy China's delicious cuisine. I have formed some treasured friendships there. It has also taught me a lot about our own culture and to be grateful for what we have as Australian citizens.
7. Do you have any advice for anyone out there who may be thinking about starting their own business?
"Aim at nothing and you are sure to hit it" - Unknown
A good idea is static and one dimensional unless it is developed. For the idea to evolve into a successful concept, it will need to transform and mature. You need a willingness to adapt, the patience to research and a passion to fuel your journey. Set attainable goals and achieve them. Stay focused and expects pitfalls along the way. If you expect a perfect ride…you are in for some surprises.
