Anyone who has been through IVF knows what a difficult journey it can be – financially, physically, and emotionally.

A new photo, shared on Facebook by a US fertility clinic, puts it into startling perspective.

"Wow, what a photo. Thank you to Sher Fertility St. Louis and Dr. Dayal patient Angela, who shows the true definition of love that went into making this gorgeous new baby girl," the caption reads.

Speaking to ABC News, mum Angela (who has chosen not to share her surname), said that in spite of the number of syringes it took in order to get pregnant, they were "the easy part".

"It was the emotional struggle, the ups and downs, that really took a toll," she said. "I'm single and waited a long time for a husband to come. And then by that time it was difficult to get pregnant."

The photo has been shared almost 6000 times, with many other mums sharing their own IVF stories in the comments.

"A decade of fertility treatments. 5 doctors, 5 clinics, 16 failed IVFs, 2 failed adoptions. Beyond blessed [with our twins]," one wrote.

"Women who go through infertility jump through so many hoops of medical testing, and shots. I did IVF 4 times. Yes, we do take all those shots and some are very painful. But most of us would do it again, in order to have a baby," another said.

And Angela, the mum of the bub in the original photo, has a message for others who are on a similar path: "hang in there."
