Fewer than 50 per cent of Australian pregnancies are planned, and less than 40 percent of women take folate before conception. That’s just a couple of the health concerns raised by Dr Debra Kennedy, director of Mothersafe, at the recent Essential Baby morning tea sponsored by Elevit with Iodine*.

Dr Kennedy explained that many women discover they are pregnant after a significant proportion of embryonic development has occurred. For example, by 6 weeks the neural tube has already formed.

She would like to see more women just thinking about pregnancy consult their doctor about getting health prior to conceiving.

This was food for thought for the 100 mums or mums-to-be In attendance at the morning tea, the third to be held in the beautiful surrounds of Sydney’s Centennial park.

With tickets now highly sought-after,  Essential Baby events have become synonymous with pampering, good food and fun for all ages.

Mums were treated to brunch and unlimited coffee, as well as manicures and shoulder massages – all free of charge. Those with toddlers and older children could sit back and relax while their children were minded by highly-rated sitters from  Find a Babysitter and entertained with pirates, fairies and face-painting.

Everyone received a goodie bag to thank them for coming, with special gifts including Glasshouse candles, chocolate, herbal tea and the fertility-boosting fresh oranges and brazil nuts.

We were overwhelmed with positive feedback about the event on our Facebook page, which included comments such as these:

I Had a lovely time. Loved my massage and manicure as well meeting lovely people.

Manicure, massage and food.. Couldn't ask for much more than that at morning tea- thank you!

Thanks for a great morning!! The kids slept the whole way home in the car!

Overall though, a quick survey of mums who attended the event indicated that their favourite part was just meeting and catching up with other mums.

We’re hoping to host EB morning tea events in other states, so keep an eye on our Face book page for more news. In the meantime, see our gallery from the day.
