Renee's family
That first pregnancy ultrasound is usually filled with nervous anticipation and excitement for new parents. But imagine the shock for parents in finding there are three little beings occupying the space on the ultrasound screen!
Mums of triplets, Marcia and Renee, share their stories - from that first amazing ultrasound to day-to-day life with their triplets and families today. Essential Baby member Renee shares her story here.
Who's in your family Renee?
My husband Mark, triplets Monique, Joshua and Stephanie (born in August 2002) and Aimee born in April 2005.
How did you and your husband react when you first found out you were expecting triplets?
We were ecstatic when we found out we were pregnant. My husband was very sick waiting for a heart transplant and we had been trying to have a baby for a long time.
We were very shocked when we had our ultrasound and saw three babies on the screen!
How did family and friends react to the news?
When we first told our friends and family that we were pregnant with triplets their initial reaction was always asking if we were joking. Then they were all very supportive and excited for us.
How did things go on the day of their birth?
I had a very difficult pregnancy being hospitalised at 20 weeks and put on strict bed rest. I wasn't even allowed out of bed to go to the toilet or shower! My cervix had started to open so I needed to have cervical stitch put in. I developed an infection when I was 26 weeks pregnant and started having contractions, so I was taken to theatre for an emergency caesarean. I was given a very quick look at Stephanie and then they were all taken to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit straight away.
What is the best thing about raising triplets?
There are so many good things! I love seeing them interact and play together. I love the way they are so individual, the bond they have with each other and you can't beat the kisses and cuddles!
What is a typical day like in your family?
Busy! I have my own routine so that everything runs smoothly. My husband leaves for work before the kids get up, so I get breakfast, get them dressed, organise school bags, take them to school, and some days I help at the school. Aimee isn't at school yet so she has activities that I take her to, like swimming and dancing. The usual housework, pick the kids up from school, do readers with them, take them to their after school activities, organise dinner, bath them, put them to bed, clean up, get lunches ready for the next day, fall into bed, only to do it all again the next day!
Do you have any advice for other parents who are expecting triplets?
Get help! Find as much support as you can, enlist your family to help out if you can. It's hard work having three babies at once. Most of all try and enjoy the time with them when they're babies as it goes so fast!
