Buying yoghurt for your kids sounds like a simple task, right?

Squeezy pouches of yoghurt are a popular option for school lunchboxes and snacks, but with an overwhelming number of options out there it can be hard to know which product is the healthiest.

Fortunately, CHOICE have just released a review of 118 different yoghurt pouches to reveal which are the worst offenders when it comes to total sugar, along with the best performers for calcium, protein and fat content.

The consumer watchdog group analysed the ingredients from popular brands including Yoplait Petit Miam, Chobani, Tamar Valley Kids and Farmers Union to determine exactly how healthy they are.

"With over 100 options to choose from, it can be really difficult to tell which yoghurt pouches are the healthiest options for your kids," says CHOICE expert Marianna Longmire.

"In our last review of yoghurt pouches in 2016 all of the products contained added sugar, but in 2020 we're seeing healthier options available as well."

Here are the results:

Yoghurts that contain the most sugar

Of the 118 yoghurts reviewed, the following had 12grams of sugar or more per 100g. It's recommended that added sugar make up only 10 percent of total energy intake.

  • Aldi's Just Organic vanilla bean yoghurt had the most sugar with 15.4g per 100g, almost 10times more than a pouch of the vanilla Cocobella Dairy Free Coconut Yoghurt (1.2g/100g).
  • Aldi Just Organic Yogurt (70g pouch: vanilla bean, strawberry, blueberry; 140g pouch: vanilla bean, strawberry)
  • Aldi Yoguri Greek Style High Protein Yogurt (strawberry)

Yoghurts that are a good source of calcium

Yoghurt is commonly thought of as a good source of calcium, although CHOICE found that not all yoghurts provide the same amount of calcium.

The Food Standards Code (FSC) says a product is a "good source of calcium" if a serving contains no less than 25 per cent% of the recommended dietary intake (RDI) for that mineral, meaning the RDI for kids aged four to eight is 700mg a day.

There were 51 yoghurts that contain 175mg calcium or more in each pouch, making them a good source of calcium.

Here they are (in alphabetical order):

  • Activia Probiotics (banana, mango, strawberry, vanilla)
  • Aldi Brooklea Yogurt Squishy (70g pouch: strawberry, banana, blueberry; 150g pouch: vanilla, strawberry, blueberry)

Yoghurts that are low fat

Healthy fats are important, but high fat yoghurt means more saturated fat, which we're meant to consume less of . A(although it's not recommended that kids under two eat low-fat products.

To be considered low-fat, yoghurt should have no more than 3g fat per 100g. Of the products that CHOICE looked at, three in five (62%) met the low-fat definition.
